Prime Minister Narendra Modi used his 80th Independence Day address from the Red Fort to lay out an expansive roadmap for a developed India by 2047, putting citizens, youth, farmers, entrepreneurs and innovators at the centre of the country’s transformation.
The speech focused on self-reliance, manufacturing, agriculture, technology, energy security, defence, infrastructure, digital innovation and inclusive development. Modi also outlined seven broad areas of strength that he said could drive India’s growth in the coming decades.

1. Aatmanirbhar Bharat: Modi reiterated the emphasis on self-reliance, Make in India, Swadeshi and Vocal for Local, with Indian products expected to compete successfully in global markets.
2. Manufacturing at global scale: India needs to build complete value chains, covering design, components and finished products, while establishing reliability, precision and quality as global benchmarks.
3. Agriculture and global markets: Farmers should move beyond production towards food processing and exports, with greater emphasis on chemical-free farming and compliance with international standards.
4. Technology and innovation: Artificial intelligence, quantum technology, robotics, space, data centres, semiconductors and next-generation communications will form key pillars of India’s growth.
5. Semiconductor self-reliance: The government is building a domestic semiconductor ecosystem, with three plants already initiated and more projects expected in the coming years.
6. Energy security: India is targeting 100 GW of nuclear power capacity by 2047 while expanding solar and other renewable energy sources, green hydrogen, energy storage and green mobility.
7. Gati Shakti and connectivity: High-speed rail, modern highways, airports, inland waterways and multimodal logistics will be strengthened to create seamless connectivity across the country.
8. Defence self-reliance: India aims to emerge as a global defence supplier by developing capabilities in areas such as drones, counter-drone systems, hypersonic technology and cybersecurity.
9. Railways and clean transport: Railway electrification, modern coaches and hydrogen-powered trains are part of the push towards cleaner and more advanced transportation.
10. Digital India and global leadership: Modi highlighted UPI and Digital Public Infrastructure as examples of India’s technological capabilities, while setting sights on taking Indian digital public technologies and Made-in-India 6G to global markets.
11. Youth as the growth engine: Young Indians are being positioned as key drivers of entrepreneurship, research and innovation, with more than 2.5 lakh registered startups and a ₹1 lakh crore Innovation Fund highlighted as part of the ecosystem.
12. AI-ready India: The government plans to train one crore young people in AI skills over the next year, with the objective of preparing Indian youth to lead the global AI economy.
13. Women and inclusive development: The vision includes creating six crore Lakhpati Didis, expanding healthcare and social-security coverage and promoting 33 per cent representation for women in legislatures.
14. India’s soft power: Yoga, Ayurveda, culture, textiles, tourism, sports, films, visual effects, animation and gaming were identified as areas through which India can expand its global influence.
15. The larger vision: Modi’s overarching message was that India must convert aspirations into resolve, resolve into strength and strength into achievement, with citizens collectively contributing to the goal of a Viksit Bharat by 2047.
