Pilgrims to get IT exemption for donations as SGPC gets recognition under Section 80-G

Amritsar, August 17, 2021 (Yes Punjab News)
The pilgrims who offer Daswandh (10 per cent of income) for the services of the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) will now be able to avail income tax exemption under Section 80-G of the Income Tax Act.

The Income Tax Appellate Tribunal, Amritsar on Monday pronounced its verdict in favour of the SGPC, which has been welcomed by the SGPC President Bibi Jagir Kaur.

Disclosing this here on Tuesday, SGPC chief secretary Advocate Harjinder Singh Dhami said that for the last about 12 years since 2009, efforts were being made for registration and rebate in income tax under Section 80-G of the Income Tax Act.

“The efforts have succeeded and the Sangat (community) will be able to get income tax exemption on the offering of Daswandh offered to the SGPC”, said Advocate Harjinder Singh Dhami.

SGPC’s chief secretary thanked the lawyers and experts who provided services during the case and said that it is a noble and good decision. He said that Advocate Prem Singh, Advocate Gunjit Singh Sial, chartered accountant Gurcharan Singh Sial and T. S. Arora have provided their services for this task.

Harjinder Singh Dhami said that since 1984, the SGPC had been struggling for recognition under Section 80-G and there have been a huge demand from the Sangat for the same.

“Recognition will now bring great relief to the Sangat. I appeal to the Sangat to avail the benefits of exemption for assisting the SGPC in management of Gurdwara Sahibans and for the services of social welfare”, said SGPC chief secretary Harjinder Singh Dhami.
