PAU student Alisha Bhatia bags best Oral Presentation Award

Ms Alisha Bhatia, an M.Sc student from the Department of Food and Nutrition, Punjab Agricultural University (PAU), has been conferred with the “Best Oral Presentation” at the 2nd International Conference on “Clinical Nutrition and Dietary Lifestyle,” organised by the Universal Society of Food and Nutrition (USFN).

She was awarded for the paper entitled “Efficacy of Vitamin D2 Enriched Mushroom Powder Supplementation on Vitamin D Deficiency and Metabolic Syndrome Biomarkers in Adults- A Randomized Control Trial.” The paper has been jointly authored by Alisha Bhatia, Sonika Sharma, Kiran Grover, Sanjeev Mahajan and Khushdeep Dharni.

Ms Alisha Bhatia is pursuing her M.Sc on the topic “Efficacy of vitamin D enriched mushroom powder on vitamin D status and metabolic syndrome biomarkers in adults” under the guidance of Dr Sonika Sharma, Professor, Department of Food and Nutrition, PAU.

Dr Sharma explained that this study was planned to evaluate the efficacy of the already commercialized PAU technology “Vitamin D enriched mushroom powder “on vitamin D status along with metabolic syndrome (MetS) in adults through randomized control trial. Dr Sharma,

while giving the details of the research, highlighted that after the intervention period of 12 weeks,a significant increase in serum vitamin D levels, calcium levels, parathyroid hormone and bone mineral density was reported.

Also the vitamin D enriched mushroom powder had a significant effect on the incidence of metabolic syndrome biomarkers i.e. reducing both systolic and diastolic blood pressure levels, triglycerides and total cholesterol.

Dr Kiran Grover, Head, Department of Food and Nutrition and Minor Advisor of the student, highlighted that the research was a joint collaboration of PAU and Fortis Hospital, Ludhiana.

Dr Sanjeev Mahajan, Director and Head of Orthopaedics from Fortis Hospital, provided necessary guidance and support for the clinical trial of the research.

Dr Grover stated that vitamin D2 enriched mushroom powder can be used as a food based approach for better nutrition and health.

Dr Satbir Singh Gosal, Vice-Chancellor, PAU; Dr Ajmer Singh Dhatt, Director of Research; Dr Kiran Bains, Dean, College of Community Science; and Dr Kiran Grover, Head, Department of Food and Nutrition; congratulated the team for the collaborative effort.
