NEET row: ABVP calls for exemplary action against guilty, demands CBI probe into paper leaks

NEET-paper

New Delhi, June 21 2024-

The Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), the student wing of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), has come down heavily on the National Testing Agency (NTA) over the irregularities and lapses in conducting the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET) and the National Eligibility Test (NET), demanding a CBI probe into its ‘entire mechanism’.

Venting his ire over the alleged paper leaks and their impact on lakhs of students, ABVP National General Secretary Yagywalkya Shukla said the credibility of NTA has come under lens because of the recent episodes, adding that it was the legitimate right of the students to raise a hue and cry and lodge protest over its failures.

“The UGC-NET was cancelled after a question paper leak. This raises many questions about NTA’s preparedness. Mismanagement in UGC NET has exposed the shortcomings of the examination body… It shows how ill-prepared it was in conducting the competitive exams,” Shukla said.

He also demanded a CBI probe into the entire row and urged the government to take stringent action against the ‘heinous’ crime of paper leaks.

“The 24 lakh students who appeared for NEET-UG are concerned about their future. They are all looking at the Education Ministry with much hope. The government must take definitive and exemplary action. No guilty person should be spared and it should become a benchmark so that it’s not repeated in the future,” he said.

Notably, the Education Ministry cancelled the UGC-NET a day after the test was conducted on June 18 following concerns over the exam’s integrity.

The ABVP General Secretary also demanded the government to strengthen the paper leak law enacted in February 2024 to stamp out the mafia from the system.

“The Education Ministry should take adequate steps not just for putting an end to paper leaks, but also to assure and convince the students that their future won’t get imperiled because of such episodes,” he said.

Suggesting a multi-pronged strategy to deal with the crisis, the ABVP leader said, “The Centre should ensure that transparency is maintained in competitive as well as entrance exams and they must remain devoid of any malpractices.”

It becomes incumbent upon the government to take all necessary steps to maintain the sanctity of exams while ensuring the candidates’ unflinching faith in the system, he said. (Agency)

4 students of Mumbai college drown in Raigad waterfall

Hand-in-Sea drowning

Raigad (Maharashtra), June 21 2024-

Four students of the Rizvi College in Mumbai’s Bandra drowned while on a monsoon picnic at a waterfall adjacent to a dam in Maharashtra’s Raigad district on Friday afternoon, police said.

The four students were part of a group of 37 other boys and girls from Mumbai who had gone to the picturesque Saibaba Dam with a waterfall, near the Pokharwadi village.

The victims were identified as Akash Mane, 20, Ranjit Banda, 18, Eklavya Singh, 18, and Ishant Yadav, 19.

The tragedy occurred when the group, including 17 girls, were returning after a monsoon trekking expedition to the nearby Sondai Fort and decided to take a dip in the dam waters, around 3 p.m.

As they entered the water, one of them started drowning and shouted for help, and when the other three jumped to save him, they also were pulled into the water. As per preliminary information by the police and local eyewitnesses, they apparently misjudged the depth of the waters and may have been stuck in the mud on the dam floor, leading to their drowning.

The other students informed the Khalapur police which rushed a team and with help from the villagers, the bodies of the victims were taken out and taken to a nearby health centre for an autopsy.

The stunned families of the victims also reached the spot and were being consoled by the other students as they awaited the completion of the police formalities before claiming the bodies. (Agency)

Ranvir Shorey hopes to get good acting assignments after ‘Bigg Boss OTT 3’

Mumbai, June 22 2024-

Actor Ranvir Shorey, one of the contestants in the third edition of ‘Bigg Boss OTT’, said he is hoping to get some good acting assignments after the reality show.

When asked if he would be seen in more reality shows, Ranvir told IANS: “I don’t think I will be doing a reality show immediately after this, but in this business, you can’t be sure because a lot of things depend on what you are getting as an actor.”

The actor wants to get back to his “main job” post, ‘Bigg Boss OTT 3’.

“As an actor, you are not consistently getting good work. So, I am hoping to get good acting assignments after this and go back to my main job, which is acting. So, there is no plan yet to get into any reality show,” he said.

Ranvir shared that every year he would receive a call from the makers of the show, but for various reasons, he couldn’t participate. However, this year is different, as he explained why he chose to do the third season of the OTT version of the show, hosted by Anil Kapoor.

“This year, what was special was that my son is going for his summer holidays with his mother to the US for a month, and I had no major work. So, I thought it fit well right now in my life. The second reason is that I badly needed a detox from screens because everything is just screens. Entertainment and communication are on screen. I was tired of dead-scrolling on social media,” said Ranvir.

The actor found it healthy to take a break from it (screen time) for one-and-a-half months.

“So, basically, this is the mindset I am going in with. I am hoping to get something out of Bigg Boss, not just Bigg Boss getting something out of me,” he said.

With Anil Kapoor taking on hosting duties, Ranvir hopes the veteran star “cuts him some slack.”

“If Salman was there, I would have been happy, as I have worked with him before. I think that could have worked in my favour as a contestant, but Anil sir is a legend, a charming person, and he brings great energy, vibrance, and a certain youthfulness.”

“So, I am quite excited to interact with him. I am hoping he will cut me some slack,” he added.

Even the most patient person loses his cool in the ‘Bigg Boss’ house, what does he think about it?

“I am a very impatient and uncool person, so that will be a challenge for me to keep my temper in check. But the good thing is that I am not under any pressure. I am going there to be there for one month or a month and a half. That will help me stay calm,” he said.

‘Bigg Boss OTT 3’ airs on Jio Cinema Premium. (Agency)

Canadian minister clueless on why Trudeau govt placed separatist Nijjar on ‘no fly’ list, froze his bank account

Hardeep-Singh-Nijjar

New Delhi, June 21 2024-

In a video clip that has now gone viral on social media, Canada’s Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland is seen struggling for answers when asked about the Canadian Parliament paying tribute to slain Khalistani separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar even though the government led by Justin Trudeau put him on a ‘no-fly’ list and also had his bank accounts frozen long before his assassination.

The video, which shows Freeland taking questions at an event, generated quite a bit of interest on a day when India made it clear once again that it will continue to highlight and oppose the political space that has been given in Canada to separatism, extremism, and violence.

“We naturally oppose any moves of giving political space to extremism and those advocating violence,” Randhir Jaiswal, spokesperson for the External Affairs Ministry, told the media in New Delhi.

The MEA spokesperson was responding to a question on the Canadian Parliament observing silence on the first death anniversary of Sikh radical Nijjar, earlier this week.

In the viral video clip, Freeland, who has also earlier served as the Foreign Minister of Canada, was asked why the Trudeau government put Nijjar on a ‘no-fly’ list and even froze his bank accounts while he was alive.

“It was important to have a moment of silence to recognise that this was a murder of a Canadian in Canada and on Canadian soil. That is entirely unacceptable,” Freeland said.

The clip then showed the Canadian minister continuing to praise Trudeau for taking a strong stance on the issue, without answering the queries raised on Nijjar.

“I was very proud of the Prime Minister and of the strong position he took after the murder. It was the right thing to do but not an easy thing. He (Trudeau) made it clear that for the Government of Canada, all Canadians are the same, all Canadians have the same rights, and murder on Canadian soil is just not allowed and the government of Canada will enforce our laws and protect all Canadians regardless of who is threatening us or what the consequences would be,” Freeland said.

Pro-Khalistan elements continue to spread anti-India feelings through their extremist statements and activities in Canada even as the Indian government has repeatedly expressed its deep concern and strong protest at the disturbing actions being allowed to continue unchecked in the country.

Last month, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar slammed the Trudeau government for giving refuge to pro-Khalistani elements, asserting that further deterioration in bilateral ties would eventually result in a big loss for Canada.

“Freedom of speech cannot be freedom to advocate violence, freedom of speech cannot be freedom to support separatism and terrorism in a foreign country. It cannot be… A group of Khalistanis have been misusing Canada’s freedom laws for years. But when the Canadian government has any political compulsions, they accommodate these people who are also their vote bank,” Jaishankar said while speaking at a ‘Vishwabandhu Bharat’ interaction session in Nashik.

New Delhi has conveyed to Ottawa on several occasions that democratic countries that respect the rule of law should not allow intimidation by radical elements in the name of freedom of expression.

“Our relations have been spoiled today because of the activities of these people who are even threatening our Ambassador and various diplomats posted in the country. They threw smoke bombs inside the High Commission and, at one time, our diplomats were facing great difficulty in getting out of the building. People who supported terror activities against India have been given refuge in Canada. The government there should have a relook at the entire situation,” Jaishankar said. (Agency)
