Experts call for ‘early action’ against Mpox to help mobilise resources, tackle spread

Monkeypox

New Delhi, Aug 15, 2024
‘Early action’ against Mpox (formerly Monkeypox) may be crucial to mobilise resources and tackle the spread of the deadly infectious disease, said health experts on Thursday, even as the World Health Organisation (WHO) declared a global health emergency for Mpox.

Mpox infections have spread across 13 African countries, including Congo, where 14,000 cases and 524 deaths have been reported, the WHO said.

It is the second time in three years that Mpox has reached emergency status.

The public health emergency of international concern (PHEIC) is the highest health alarm by the WHO.

Mpox is a viral zoonotic disease that was first identified in monkeys in research laboratories in the 1950s, and it was not until 1970 that the first human case was discovered.

An offshoot of Clade I — Clade 1b — is responsible for the recent surge in infections, the UN health body said.

Clade 1b of the Mpox virus is estimated to have jumped from animal to human as recently as September 2023.

“Unlike the previous clade, the current strain — Clade 1b — is spreading both among men and women through close and sexual contact. This time, children living in the household are also getting affected, and the death rate is higher than the 2022 outbreak,” Dr Rajeev Jayadevan, co-chairman of the Indian Medical Association’s National Covid-19 Task Force, told IANS.

“This means the virus has acquired the potential to spread more efficiently in multiple neighbouring countries, and an early call for action will not only mobilise resources to contain the outbreak in Africa, but also prepare the world to tackle global spread in case it occurred,” he added.

According to the latest WHO situation report on Mpox, India reported 27 laboratory-confirmed cases and one death between January 2022 and June 2024.

The report also noted that four new countries in Eastern Africa — Burundi, Kenya, Rwanda, and Uganda — have reported their first Mpox cases.

The Africa CDC has also declared a Public Health Emergency of Continental Security (PHECS). It reported that the suspected cases in the first half of 2024 have exceeded 17,000, representing a four-fold increase since 2022.

Infectious disease expert Dr Ishwar Gilada told IANS that the disease has no parallels with Covid-19.

“Mpox can cause fever, rashes, lymph node enlargement, and some people can get a systemic infection”.

“It is not spread by aerosols. There is an extremely remote possibility of its spread through droplets, or surfaces. Masks will not provide any protection from the Mpox,” said Dr Gilada, also a HIV/STD consultant, Secretary General People’s Health Organisation-India and OMAG.

Calling Mpox a “21st Century’s sexually transmitted disease (STD)”, the expert said it is majorly sexually transmitted, with 99 per cent of cases seen among men who have sex with men (MSM).

Dr. Basavaraj S Kumbar, Consultant – Internal medicine, Aster Whitefield Hospital, Bengaluru, told IANS, that the disease typically begins with signs of flu — fever, headache, muscle pains, and tiredness.

It then proceeds to “a unique rash which typically starts on the face and spreads to other parts of the body. This rash goes through different phases before it finally dries up,” Dr. Kumbar said. One thing that distinguishes Mpox from other viral infections is swollen lymph nodes, he added.

There is currently no proven treatment against Mpox. Jynneos and Bavarian Nordic vaccines can prevent Mpox, Dr. Gilada said, calling on India to develop its own vaccine, like SARS-CoV-2, the virus behind Covid-19 pandemic.

“India’s strength in vaccine production should be positively exploited,” Dr. Gilada said.

Dr. Kumbar advised to avoid close contact with anyone displaying the symptoms, especially those with an unexplained rash. He also recommended good hygiene practices such as frequent handwashing using soap and water, and sanitising hands.(Agency)

Bengal Guv visits RG Kar, assures protesting docs of support for justice

CV-Ananda-Bose

Kolkata, Aug 15, 2024
West Bengal Governor, CV Ananda Bose, on Thursday afternoon, reached the premises of state-run RG Kar Medical College & Hospital to take stock of the situation in the backdrop of reports of vandalism at the emergency unit a few minutes after midnight on Wednesday.

Governor Bose interacted with the junior doctors and medical students protesting there against the heinous rape and murder of a junior doctor within the hospital premises last week.

Besides assuring the protesters of full cooperation and support in their movement for justice, Governor Bose also surveyed the condition of the ransacked emergency unit.

“Let me first survey the situation. I assure you that whatever steps in the matter will be taken in future will be done only after discussing with you all,” the Governor was heard telling the protesting medical staff.

Later, speaking to the media, Governor Bose said that whatever had happened at RG Kar in the last few days was a blot on humanity.

“I will not tolerate such things at any cost. The demands of the protesting doctor are just that the real culprits should be nabbed and punished. Students are the future of the country. They should be given a proper hearing.” the Governor said.

He also questioned the role of the police while the midnight ransacking at the hospital premises was going on.

“Were there not adequate security arrangements at the hospital then?” he questioned.

On Wednesday evening only the Governor had issued a video message where he stated that the state government will have to take responsibility for the law and order situation in West Bengal.

“Campus violence should stop immediately. The state government will have to take the responsibility. Everyone will have to unite for the sake of safety of women,” the Governor said.(Agency)

South Korea voices ‘deep regret’ over Japan PM’s offering to Yasukuni Shrine

Seoul, Aug 15, 2024
South Korea’s foreign ministry expressed “deep regret” on Thursday that Japanese political leaders, including Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, sent offerings or paid visits to a war shrine, a symbol of Japan’s militaristic past.

The statement came after visits by the Japanese ministers to the Yasukuni Shrine, which honours Japanese war dead, including 14 Class A criminals convicted by the Allies in trials that followed World War II, Yonhap news agency reported.

“The government expresses deep disappointment and regret that Japan’s responsible leaders again sent offerings or paid visits to the Yasukuni Shrine that beautifies Japan’s past war of aggression,” the ministry said in a statement.

“We urge the responsible leaders of Japan to squarely face up to history and show through action a humble reflection and genuine repentance for the past.”

Japanese Defence Minister Minoru Kihara was among the officials who visited the shrine, prompting Seoul’s foreign ministry to summon Taisuke Mibae, deputy chief of mission at the Japanese Embassy in Seoul, to strongly protest the visit.

It marked the first time in three years for a sitting Japanese defence minister to visit the shrine.

“(We) cannot but deplore the anachronistic act,” a foreign ministry official said.

The defence ministry also called in a defence attache at the Japanese Embassy to strongly protest Kihara’s visit to the shrine, it said, noting that it goes against the two countries’ efforts to develop future-oriented relations.(Agency)

We’re trying to create a special fund for Test cricket, says Jay Shah

Jay-Shah

New Delhi, Aug 15, 2024
Jay Shah, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) Secretary, has said discussions are underway at the International Cricket Council (ICC) to create a special fund for the survival of Test cricket in the future.

“I am a member of F&CA (Finance and Commercial Affairs) of the ICC. I have suggested there should be a dedicated fund for Test cricket. It’s very expensive to host Test matches. If the (ICC) Board approves, we can do that. We’re trying to create a special fund for Test cricket,” Shah was quoted as saying by The Times of India.

He also said India doesn’t play many Day-Night Tests at home as they tend to end in two days and don’t benefit the spectators as well as broadcasters. India have played three day-night Tests at home, which have ended in less than three days. The last Day-Night Test for India at home was against Sri Lanka at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bengaluru in March 2022, which they won by 238 runs.

“Spectators and broadcasters are losing out. Ultimately, we have to look at their sentiments also. As a fan if you are buying a ticket for five days and if the match ends in two days, there is no refund. I am very emotional about that issue.”

Asked about some day Test games ending quickly, Shah remarked, “It’s not happening often. If it happens once in a while and if the opposition plays badly, how can I help? When our players do well, I can’t tell our players to ensure the match lasts longer.”

Quizzed over the possibility of starting a World Test Championship for women’s cricket, Shah stated it would be possible only when all countries play the longer format. “It can happen only when all countries start playing Test cricket.”

“The problem is, apart from India, Australia and England, other teams are not playing Tests. New Zealand and South Africa have started playing Tests lately. Things will progress when all countries start playing Tests.”

Speaking about the Impact Player rule and whether it will be continued in the Indian Premier League (IPL), Shah said, “We had a long chat about this in the recent meeting with the franchise owners. We had a long chat among our domestic teams also. There are positives and negatives to it.”

“The negative is that it affects the all-rounders and the positive side is that it gives an opportunity to an extra Indian player. We should think about the broadcasters also. For me as an administrator, the game is important. Let’s see what feedback we’re getting.”

He signed off by saying the BCCI will consider all factors for the mega auctions.

“We’ve heard the views of all the franchises. For us, a minority view is as important as the majority opinion. Ultimately the office-bearers (of the BCCI) will decide. Those who have a good side said there is no need for the big auction and those without a good side wanted the big auction. Continuity is important as shuffling, for the growth of the game.”(Agency)

Brad Pitt, George Clooney settle ‘hair-raising’ conflict after Hollywood clash in 1980s

Los Angeles, Aug 15, 2024
Hollywood stars Brad Pitt and George Clooney have finally put their 1980s rivalry to rest.

The two had rocked their signature mullet hairdos at the same time leading to a “conflict”. Now, Pitt and Clooney have finally discussed who brought the best hair forward.

Talking to GQ about the attempt and their decades-old rivalry, Pitt said: “I would say one of the greatest that ever existed…”

Clooney was quick to ask, “Was my mullet or your mullet?” Brad went on to say: “I’m going to say mine.”

Appearing to agree, Clooney said he “might say” it was his, but said that both of their hairstyles were a “really good shared experience”, reports mirror.co.uk.

The pair starred together in the 2001 film “Ocean’s Eleven”. They reunited in 2004’s “Ocean’s Twelve” and “Ocean’s Thirteen” in 2007.

Pitt also acted in Clooney’s “Confessions of a Dangerous Mind” in 2022, they both starred in Tom Daley’s husband Dustin Lance Black’s play 8 in 2012.

Clooney’s mullet defeat admission comes after he didn’t mince words when he expressed his feelings about director David O. Russell, referring to him as “miserable.”

Later in the chat with Pitt, Clooney said he would steer clear from working with Russell again.

He denounced the 65-year-old filmmaker for making his own and his crew’s lives “hell”, questioning whether the struggle was worthwhile even for “a good product.”

Kicking off the subject, he said: “The older you get, time allotment is very different. Five months out of your life is a lot.”

“And so it’s not just like, ‘Oh, I’m going to go do a really good film, like Three Kings, and I’m going to have a miserable.. like David O Russell making my life hell. Making every person in the crew’s life hell. It’s not worth it. Not at this point in my life. Just to have a good product.”

Clooney famously clashed with the director during the production of “Three Kings”, which released back in October 1999. He opened up about the tumultuous filming of “Three Kings”, calling it “the worst experience of (his) life.”(Agency)

Putin lauds India’s ‘widely-recognised track record of success’ in I-Day greetings to President Murmu, PM Modi

Putin-hosts-PM-Modi

Moscow, Aug 15, 2024
Lauding India’s “widely-recognised track record of success”, Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Thursday that Moscow attaches great importance to the privileged strategic partnership between the two countries.

In another statement, the Russian Foreign Ministry also hailed the longstanding partnership between the countries, saying that India now enjoys a “well-deserved authority” in the world arena.

“Over the course of 77 years of its development as an independent nation, your country has achieved a widely-recognised track record of success in social, economic, scientific, technical affairs, as well as in many other spheres, and has earned great prestige on the international stage,” Putin wrote in his message to President Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the occasion of India’s Independence Day.

“We attach great importance to the relations of a privileged strategic partnership with India, and I am certain that our consistent efforts to fulfil the agreements resulting from our recent talks in Moscow will contribute to further expanding the multi-faceted cooperation between Russia and India. There is no doubt that this would serve the interests of our friendly nations, while strengthening international stability and security,” he added.

Meanwhile, the Russian Foreign Ministry also hailed the diplomatic relations between the two countries, saying that the friendly Russian-Indian ties are based on equality, mutual respect and trust.

“India enjoys well-deserved authority in the world arena, playing a major constructive role in international affairs. Today, our relations can be defined as a special and privileged strategic partnership.

We maintain an intensive political dialogue, and take efforts to strengthen cooperation within multilateral formats and improve trade, economic, investment, scientific, technical, cultural and humanitarian cooperation,” stated the Russian Foreign Ministry in its I-Day greetings to New Delhi.

It also mentioned about the decades of “Indian people’s hard struggle against the oppression of the British colonisers” for the right to determine their own destiny.

Over the years of independence, said the Russian Foreign Ministry, India has reached significant success in the economic, scientific, technical and social areas, preserving its strong identity based on the centuries-long history and rich cultural heritage.

Congratulating “Indian friends” on the Independence Day, Moscow highlighted that the USSR had made a “significant contribution” to the industrialisation of India as well as to the development of its economic and scientific potential.

“Today, our relations can be defined as a special and privileged strategic partnership. We maintain an intensive political dialogue, and take efforts to strengthen cooperation within multilateral formats and improve trade, economic, investment, scientific, technical, cultural and humanitarian cooperation,” it said.(Agency)

Congress faces backlash over Shah Bano, Emergency after Jairam slams PM Modi’s ‘communal’ civil code remark

Congress Jairam Ramesh

New Delhi, Aug 15, 2024
Political analysts on Thursday questioned Congress’ claim that Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s “communal civil code” remark made during his Independence Day speech was a “gross insult” to B.R. Ambedkar.

They argued that it was the Nehru-Gandhi family which undermined the Constitution shaped by Baba Saheb Ambedkar.

The debate heated up following Prime Minister Modi’s Independence Day speech from the Red Fort on Thursday, wherein he criticised the existing civil codes as “communal” and “discriminatory”, making a compelling argument for adopting the Uniform Civil Code (UCC).

On social media, critics and experts are pointing out that it was the Congress government which overturned the Shah Bano case judgment and imposed Emergency, which many view as a flagrant disregard for the Constitution.

“Babasaheb Ambedkar’s Constitution was always secular. It was the way Nehru-Gandhi Parivar implemented it that converted the lived-reality into a ghastly communal experience,” said an expert in a post on X.

“Was it Ambedkar who overturned the SC judgement in the Shah Bano case? Was it Dr. Ambedkar who mangled the Constitution during Emergency? In fact, it is Dr. Ambedkar’s Constitution which has Article 44 as Directive Principles – something which successive generations of Nehru Parivar have scuttled,” the post added.

The X post went on to say, “Here is what Dr. Ambedkar said when the provision for a Uniform Civil Code was being debated – ‘My friend, Mr Hussain Imam, in rising to support the amendments, asked whether it was possible and desirable to have a uniform code of laws for a country so vast as this is.

Now I must confess that I was very much surprised at that statement for the simple reason that we have in this country a uniform code of laws covering almost every aspect of human relationship. We have a uniform and complete Criminal Code operating throughout the country, which is contained in the Penal Code and the Criminal Procedure Code.

We have the Law of Transfer of Property, which deals with property relations and which is operative throughout the country. Then there are the Negotiable Instruments Acts.

I can cite innumerable enactments which would prove that this country has practically a Civil Code, uniform in its content and applicable to the whole of the country. The only province the Civil Law has not been able to invade so far is Marriage and Succession’.”

“So Jairam, better start schooling third time fail Rahul Gandhi on true history of his family rather than continuously feeding him with venomous lies,” the expert pointed out.

Earlier, Congress’ Communications chief Jairam Ramesh wrote on X, “The non-biological PM’s capacity for malice, mischief, and maligning of history knows no bounds. It was on full display today from the Red Fort.

To say that we have had a “communal civil code” till now is a gross insult to Dr. Ambedkar, who was the greatest champion of reforms in Hindu personal laws that became a reality by the mid 1950s. These reforms had been bitterly opposed by the RSS and the Jan Sangh.”

Ramesh also quoted a 21st Law Commission’s consultation paper on reform of family law dated August 31, 2018, which said UCC “is neither necessary nor desirable at this stage”.

“While diversity of Indian culture can and should be celebrated, specific groups or weaker sections of the society must not be disadvantaged in the process. Resolution of this conflict does not mean abolition of all differences.

This commission has therefore dealt with laws that are discriminatory rather than providing a Uniform Civil Code which is neither necessary nor desirable at this stage. Most countries are moving towards recognition of differences and the mere existence of difference does not imply discrimination, but is indicative of a robust democracy,” Ramesh wrote quoting the consultation paper.

Earlier, Prime Minister Modi said during his address from the Red Fort, “In our country, the Supreme Court has repeatedly discussed the Uniform Civil Code. It has given orders many times because a large section of the country believes, and there is truth in it, that the civil code with which we are living is really a kind of communal civil code, a discriminatory civil code.”(Agency)

UP man detained in Chennai airport after used bullets found in his handbag

Chennai-airport

Chennai, Aug 15, 2024
A 45-year-old man from Uttar Pradesh was detained on Thursday by the Chennai airport authorities after three used bullets were obtained from his hand baggage.

The passenger was detained when he reached the airport to travel to Delhi on an Indigo flight.

The Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) officers, during the screening of his bag, found three used 8mm bullets in it.

He was immediately detained and on questioning, he said that he was a teacher in Uttar Pradesh and that he had reached the city to visit his son who was a student in a private college in Chennai.

According to Chennai airport officials, he told the interrogators that he was not aware of the used shells in his bag and that the bag belonged to his brother who was serving in the Army.

However, security officers cancelled his ticket and he is being interrogated for the veracity of his statement. A thorough background check of the passenger is also being done.

As part of the Independence Day celebrations, the security at Chennai airport was beefed up.

It may be recalled that a few months ago, 40 live bullets were received from the hand baggage of Tamil actor-turned-politician and AIADMK leader, Karunas.

The actor-politician was travelling to Tiruchi from Chennai and his hand baggage triggered an alarm during the security check and authorities stopped him.

On inspection, authorities found two boxes containing 0.32 calibre ammunition. Karunas told authorities that he was in procession of a valid gun licence and that he was fully aware of the regulations in carrying bullets in the bag, adding that he failed to remove the bullets from his bag as he was in a hurry.

However, he was not allowed to travel by air and had to travel by road to Tiruchi.(Agency)
