Bomb threat email triggers panic at Muzaffarpur civil court, probe underway

Bomb Threats E-Mail

Patna, March 26, 2026
A tense situation prevailed on Thursday at the Muzaffarpur Civil Court complex after a bomb threat email triggered panic among lawyers, staff, and visitors.

According to officials, a suspicious email was sent to the District Judge’s official ID around 11.30 a.m., claiming that an explosive device had been planted within the court premises. Following this, the administration immediately swung into action, tightening security and evacuating the entire complex as a precaution.

Police and administrative teams quickly reached the spot, set up a security zone, and ensured that everyone was safely moved out of the premises. Judicial proceedings were suspended for the first half of the day amid the security alert.

Advocate Rajesh Kumar said that information regarding the suspension of court work was circulated through WhatsApp groups. Many lawyers found their offices locked, with clear instructions issued to vacate the campus.

Another advocate, Sanjay Prasad, expressed concern over the incident, noting that such threats have been occurring frequently in Bihar, raising serious questions about security.

Authorities are treating the matter with utmost seriousness, and a further probe is underway to verify the authenticity of the threat and trace its source.

Teams from the bomb disposal squad and dog squad have reached the court complex and are conducting an intensive search operation. Every corner of the premises is being thoroughly checked for any suspicious or unattended objects.

“As of now, no suspicious object has been found, but all aspects are being closely monitored,” the DSP said. He urged people not to believe in rumours and to cooperate with authorities until the security checks are completed.

Officials also highlighted that in recent months, several courts across Bihar have received similar bomb threats, often triggering panic and disruption of judicial work.

Security agencies remain on high alert, taking each threat seriously to ensure public safety and maintain order within court premises.(Agency)

Bengal polls: BJP defends move to field RG Kar victim’s mother from Panihati

Whistle-blower-in-RG-Kar

New Delhi, March 26, 2026
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders on Thursday defended the party’s decision to field the mother of the junior doctor of West Bengal’s R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata, who was raped and murdered within the hospital premises in August 2024, from the Panihati Assembly constituency in North 24 Parganas district.

The victim’s mother, Ratna Debnath, featured in the party’s third list of 19 candidates, announced on Wednesday, for the forthcoming two-phase Assembly elections in the state next month.

BJP National General Secretary Tarun Chugh told IANS, “The BJP has ensured that the victim’s voice is heard in Bengal’s largest panchayat, enabling her to receive justice. (BJP) has shown the victim’s mother the way to the Bengal Assembly.”

Chugh accused the West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress government of sheltering the culprits in the case.

He said, “The cruel Trinamool government of Mamata Banerjee in Bengal had committed injustice against the victim of the R.G. Kar Medical College (case). Mamata Banerjee’s government made every possible effort to protect the culprits and employed every tactic to suppress the case.”

Bihar BJP President Sanjay Saraogi also praised the decision.

He said, “She should definitely be given (the ticket). This is a matter of women’s respect and empowerment. She (the victim) had to go through such brutal things; if the BJP had given her (the victim’s mother) a ticket (to contest the Assembly polls), this would be a mark of respect to women’s rights. She will win in Bengal and raise her voice in the Assembly. The BJP has done a great job.”

Notably, Ratna Debnath is also a voter from the Panihati constituency.

It may be recalled that on March 23, Leader of Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly, Suvendu Adhikari, had informed media persons that the parents of the R.G. Kar victim had taken primary membership of the BJP.

However, Adhikari had then said that whether any of them would be fielded as a candidate from Panihati would be decided by the party’s central leadership. On Wednesday, the party announced the name of the victim’s mother as its candidate from the constituency.(Agency)

Congress breathes easy as Kerala HC upholds Vigilance clean chit in Sabarimala flag post controversy

Kerala High Court 1

Kochi, March 26, 2026
In a significant development, the Kerala High Court on Thursday closed the corruption and irregularities case related to the reconstruction of the golden flag mast at Sabarimala, bringing an end to a controversy that had triggered intense political and public debate.

The court accepted, in full, the quick verification report submitted by the Vigilance department and ruled that no further proceedings were required.

Endorsing the Vigilance findings, the court observed that there was no material evidence to substantiate allegations of corruption in the flag mast reconstruction carried out during the Congress-led UDF government’s tenure.

It concluded that no criminal case could be registered based on the available records, effectively giving a clean chit to the then Travancore Devaswom Board.

The Vigilance report underscored complete transparency in the handling of gold received for the project.

A total of 412 grams of gold had been donated by devotees and well-wishers for the reconstruction.

The investigation found that the entire quantity was properly accounted for and utilised for the making of the Vaji Vahanam and the Ashtadikpalakas, with no discrepancy in weight or usage.

Statements were recorded from 23 individuals, including prominent contributors, and were found to be fully consistent with the official records maintained by the Devaswom Board.

In total, 27 donors, including noted film personalities such as Mohanlal, Ranjith Panicker, Priyadarshan, Shaji Kailas and Suresh Gopi, had contributed gold for the reconstruction.

The Vigilance informed the court that details of four donors could not be traced, but this did not affect the overall accounting.

According to the report, the donated gold was received by ASP Kurup and official receipts were issued by the Devaswom authorities, further reinforcing the integrity of the process.

The court was satisfied that there was no evidence of document tampering or misappropriation.

The report also clarified that the decision to replace the flag mast was based on the directives of the 2014 Deva Prasnam, with the reinstallation completed in 2017 following prescribed ritual procedures.

The court noted that there was nothing suspicious in the process and that only customary practices had been followed.

However, the verdict has sharpened focus on a separate ongoing “gold smuggling” case linked to Sabarimala, where officials from the Left government period are under scrutiny for alleged diversion of gold from idols and temple structures.

The Special Investigation Team has informed the court that the final chargesheet in that case will be filed only after the Assembly elections, citing the need for scientific evidence.

With the High Court’s ruling now clearing the UDF era project, political attention is expected to shift to the pending case, even as both political circles and devotees closely watch the developments ahead.

Reacting to the clean chit, veteran Congress leader Ajay Tharayil, who was a board member at that time, said that right from the time this issue cropped up, he had made it clear that everything was done as per the rules and regulations and had nothing to worry.

“But with this issue surfacing, I lost an opportunity to contest the April Assembly polls,” he rued.(Agency)

‘Read the speculations and smiled…’: LSG owner Goenka debunks rumours around Pant’s captaincy

Rishabh Pant Cricket

New Delhi, March 26, 2026

Sanjiv Goenka, owner of Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), dismissed rumours about Rishabh Pant’s captaincy following ‘fake reports’ that suggested the wicketkeeper-batter was losing his leadership role at the franchise ahead of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 season and wished the 28-year-old luck for the tournament.

The LSG captain faced intense scrutiny for his subpar performances during IPL 2025. There were high hopes for the left-handed player after he was bought for an impressive Rs. 27 crores in last year’s mega auction, but he could not rise to the occasion. Ahead of the 19th edition of the tournament, rumours about replacing him as captain began to circulate.

However, Goenka debunked all such speculations and lauded his ‘character and commitment’ before wishing for him to have ‘a great season.’

“Heading into the season, I had read the speculations around @RishabhPant17’s captaincy and smiled. We’ve spent enough time together to know his character and commitment. Have a great season, Cap!” Goenka wrote in an X post on Thursday.

A similar news story surfaced during the IPL 2025, when Pant took control of the situation. An X user suggested that Pant might be dropped before the 2026 IPL season because LSG owners believe his price is unjustified. The LSG skipper responded to this user, urging them to exercise some sensibility and credibility before spreading false narratives.

“I understand fake News gives more traction to content, but let’s not build everything around it . Little sense and credible news will help more rather making fake news with agenda. Thanks, have a good day . Let’s be responsible and sensible what we put out on social media,” he had written on X.

Pant scored only 269 runs in the 13 matches he played last season at a poor average of 24.45. His form will be observed closely when LSG start their IPL 2026 campaign against the Delhi Capitals at the Ekana Stadium in Lucknow, their home ground, on April 1.(Agency)

Madrasa teacher found dead in Jharkhand’s Dumka hotel, woman companion detained for questioning

Dead-Body feet

Dumka (Jharkhand), March 26, 2026
Tension gripped Dumka, the sub-capital of Jharkhand, on Thursday after a madrasa teacher was found dead under suspicious circumstances in a hotel room within the Nagar police station limits of the city, officials said.

The deceased has been identified as Mohammad Sadiq Hussain Ansari, a resident of Sakrikitta Rampur under Boarijor police station in neighbouring Godda district. He was employed as a teacher at a madrasa in the district.

According to police, Ansari had checked into a hotel near Dumka’s Dudhani Tower Chowk along with a woman. The incident came to light on Thursday morning when hotel staff alerted the police after finding him unconscious in the room. He was rushed to a nearby hospital, where doctors declared him dead.

The body has been sent to Phulo Jhano Medical College Hospital for a post-mortem examination.

Preliminary inquiry suggests that the deceased and the woman were in a personal relationship. The woman, who was present in the room at the time of the incident, has been taken into custody and is being questioned.

In her statement, she has told police that Ansari’s health suddenly deteriorated shortly after they returned to the room following a meal.

She said he began to writhe in discomfort and later became unresponsive. Assuming he had fallen asleep, she said she did not initially raise an alarm, but informed hotel staff when he remained motionless for a prolonged period.

Police said they are probing the matter from all angles, including natural causes and possible foul play. They said CCTV footage from the hotel is being examined, and the deceased’s family has been informed.

The officer in charge of the police station said the exact cause of death will be known only after the post-mortem report is received.

The police are also trying to find out the reason behind the woman’s visit to Dumka.(Agency)

Odisha teenager Anjali Munda turns chance selection into historic gold at KITG 2026

Raipur, March 26, 2026

In 2022, during a regular class, when a sports teacher asked students to select different sports, 11-year-old Anjali Munda quietly raised her hand and chose swimming, the only sport she knew.

Anjali comes from Gahiragadiya village in Odisha’s Jajpur district, about 100 kilometres from Bhubaneswar. She knew swimming as a fun activity that involved splashing water, but she never received any formal training.

Anjali, the youngest of four siblings whose father is a van driver at a local factory, moved to the Kalinga Institute of Social Sciences (KISS) at age 10. There, tribal students from across the state receive free education and boarding. She was initially inspired by her elder sister, an archer.

However, when the opportunity arose, Anjali selected swimming as her preferred sport, trusting her innate ease in the water. Although it took her some time to develop the confidence to compete, she has never looked back after winning a silver medal at a local club tournament a year later.

“The silver medal was the first in my life, and is very special. It gave me the confidence that I could do well in the sport. I have to thank my coaches for believing in me, and the effort that they put during my training sessions,” said the 15-year-old Anjali, who became the first female gold medallist on the opening day of the inaugural Khelo India Tribal Games here on Wednesday.

In fact, if Anjali had not clocked 2:39:02 to win the gold in the 200m freestyle, Karnataka, India’s swimming powerhouse, would have claimed all six gold medals available on the opening day.

Anjali emphasises that her upward trend is due to the Union Sports Ministry’s targeted initiatives, such as the ASMITA League (Achieving Sports Milestone by Inspiring Women Through Action).

“In 2024, I won two silver medals in the Khelo India ASMITA League, held in Sambalpur. I had finished within striking distances of the podium in the other two events. The medals boosted my confidence further, and I believed I could do well in the bigger tournaments,” she added.

Anjali continued to excel at the recent Khelo India ASMITA (U-15 & U-18) Swimming League (East Zone) held on March 21 and 22 in Guwahati, where she won a couple of silver medals.

A few days afterwards, Anjali brought that form to the first Khelo India Tribal Games 2026 in Raipur and secured her first national gold medal. Although she achieved a landmark victory, the Odisha teenager admitted she was not completely happy with her performance, as she had hoped to surpass her personal best of 2:25.

The young athlete is now aiming to beat her personal bests in the upcoming events, specifically the women’s 50m backstroke, 100m backstroke, and 200m individual medley.(Agency)

Private fuel retailer Nayara hikes petrol by Rs 5, diesel by Rs 3

Petrol-Diesel-car

New Delhi, March 26, 2026

Nayara Energy on Thursday increased petrol and diesel prices, becoming one of the first fuel retailers in India to pass on the recent rise in global crude oil prices to consumers.

The company has raised petrol prices by Rs 5 per litre and diesel by Rs 3 per litre, according to sources.

The actual increase may vary slightly across states due to differences in local taxes such as VAT. In some regions, petrol prices have gone up by as much as Rs 5.30 per litre.

The move comes at a time when global oil prices have surged sharply following tensions in the Middle East.

Prices had jumped nearly 50 per cent since late February, after Israel carried out military strikes on Iran, leading to retaliation and fears of supply disruptions.

International crude prices recently touched around $119 per barrel before easing to about $100.

Despite this surge, state-owned oil marketing companies such as Indian Oil Corporation, Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited and Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited have not changed the prices of regular petrol and diesel, which have remained largely unchanged since April 2022.

These companies control about 90 per cent of the fuel retail market in India.

India depends heavily on imports for its energy needs, sourcing about 88 per cent of its crude oil from abroad.

A significant portion of these supplies passes through the Strait of Hormuz, a key shipping route now under threat due to rising geopolitical tensions in the region.

Meanwhile, earlier in the day, the government said that all retail outlets are operating normally with sufficient petrol and diesel stocks to meet national demand.

It added that a rapid rollout of PNG connections is currently underway across the country.

All refineries are operating at a high capacity with adequate crude inventories. While panic buying did occur in some areas due to rumours, the government has confirmed that all retail outlets are operating normally.(Agency)

Security Ops intensify in Manipur after Kuki militants open fire; illegal bunkers dismantled

Imphal, March 26, 2026

Security forces in Manipur on Thursday continued their massive joint operations in Bishnupur district after suspected armed Kuki militants opened fire at Phouljang and Gothol areas, targeting an Indian Army post, officials said.

A police official in Imphal stated that the militants opened fire in the Phouljang and Gothol areas, directing their attack towards an Indian Army post located in Phougakchao Awang Leikai. “The Indian Army and the Central Reserve Police Force (58th Battalion), deployed in the area, retaliated swiftly by returning fire, leading to an exchange of fire that lasted approximately 30 minutes late on Wednesday night,” he said.

The official added that from the early hours of Thursday, a joint operation was launched by the Indian Army, CRPF, Manipur Police, and Manipur Armed Forces (Indian Reserve Battalion) in the area where the firing occurred, as well as in adjoining hill regions.

“The situation continues to be closely monitored, and security forces will persist with operations in the surrounding hill areas,” he stated.

Manipur Police authorities have urged civilians to refrain from spreading rumours and to verify information before sharing it.

In a separate development, continuing operations that began on Wednesday, security forces dismantled six illegally constructed bunkers in the Litan and Mongkat Chepu Upper village areas of Ukhrul district.

Following the operation, the majority of bunkers in the violence-affected Litan area have been rendered ineffective. Security forces remain on high alert, with troops strategically deployed to prevent any escalation of violence in the region, the official added.

Meanwhile, security forces arrested an active cadre of the United National Liberation Front (UNLF) from the Patsoi area of Imphal West district. The arrested militant has been identified as Asem Subash Meitei alias Lingjelkhomba (30). A mobile phone was seized from his possession.

In another major operation, security forces on Sunday (March 22) arrested 14 cadres of the UNLF (Koireng faction) from the Haokhong area of Thoubal district. A significant cache of items was recovered from them, including two INSAS rifles, 13 magazines of various weapons, 100 rounds of INSAS ammunition, cash amounting to Rs one lakh, 12 mobile phones, five helmets, five backpacks, and four vehicles.

Security forces, comprising both central and state units, continue extensive crackdowns on militant activities across the state. Search operations and area domination drives are ongoing in fringe, mixed-population, and vulnerable areas across multiple districts.

A total of 113 checkpoints have been set up across Manipur in both valley and hill districts to monitor and restrict the movement of suspicious individuals and vehicles.

Additionally, security forces are providing escorts to vehicles, including trucks carrying essential commodities, along the Imphal-Jiribam National Highway (NH-37).

Strict security arrangements and convoy protection measures remain in place in sensitive stretches to ensure safe transit. Manipur Police have once again urged the public not to believe rumours or be misled by fake videos circulating on social media.(Agency)

Bengaluru among top 10 global tech hubs, I don’t want to compare it with Hyderabad: K’taka Deputy CM

DK Shivakumar Dy CM

Bengaluru, March 26, 2026

Responding to comparisons between Bengaluru and Hyderabad, Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar, stated that he does not wish to compare Bengaluru, which stands in sixth position as a global tech hub with Hyderabad, which is placed 26th.

Speaking in the Legislative Assembly on Thursday, Dy CM Shivakumar, who also handles the Bengaluru Development portfolio, said, “According to a recent report, Bengaluru is among the top 10 global tech hubs. San Francisco ranks first, followed by London in second place. Bengaluru stands in sixth position, just behind Beijing, which is ranked fifth, while Hyderabad is placed 26th.” “I do not want to compete with Hyderabad,” he added.

Former Deputy Chief Minister, C.N. Ashwath Narayan, intervened, stating that they, too, do not want Bengaluru to be compared with Hyderabad.

“In our country, there is no city that can be compared to Bengaluru. Our request is that, in certain aspects such as cost of living, Hyderabad may be around 50 per cent cheaper, and facilities may be better there. However, the cosmopolitan nature and talent pool available in Bengaluru cannot be found anywhere else. It must be preserved and its growth ensured,” he said.

“In reality, the role of the government in all this is minimal. All governments have neglected Bengaluru. Normally, discussions about Bengaluru do not take place,” Ashwath Narayan added.

At this point, Health Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao said that Bengaluru attained a special status due to the establishment of public sector industries, as well as educational and academic institutions by successive governments. This later paved the way for the IT revolution, hence, the government had played a significant role in its success.

Leader of the Opposition R. Ashoka said that Hyderabad is being used as a point of reference because the media often compares the two cities.

“If you (Shivakumar) choose not to speak about Hyderabad, it may be perceived as being in favour of it. Bengaluru was not built by us; it grew naturally. The interest of Karnataka is paramount, otherwise the matter may take a political turn, especially since the Congress is in power there under Chief Minister Revanth Reddy,” he said.

Shivakumar said, “Bengaluru has given me everything, and I want to contribute. I cannot do it alone; everyone must cooperate. There are 250 engineering colleges and 70 medical colleges in Bengaluru. Nowhere else in the country can you see this. Every year, 13,940 doctors graduate from medical colleges in Karnataka—where are they going? Much of this talent is moving abroad.”

He added that the Prime Minister of the Netherlands had shared with him that the country saved 40 per cent of costs by opting for services from Bengaluru compared to other global cities.

Shivakumar further said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had recently visited Bengaluru and referred to it as a global city. He recalled that former Prime Minister, late Atal Bihari Vajpayee had once observed that there was a time when foreign leaders would first visit Delhi and then travel to other states. “Now, world leaders are coming to Bengaluru first and then going to Delhi,” he said, referring to visits by prime ministers from China, Japan, the United Kingdom, Poland, and other countries within a short span.

“All sections of society, including students and technocrats, have contributed to this growth. Today, Bengaluru has 26 lakh IT professionals. Out of the Fortune 500 companies, around 400 have a presence in Bengaluru. The American Ambassador has requested that Bengaluru develop 10 world-class schools. In California’s Silicon Valley, there are about 1.35 million engineers, whereas Bengaluru has around 26 lakh engineers. This is the strength of Bengaluru,” he said.(Agency)
