‘Like earth and sky’: Omar Abdullah draws comparison between Mian Altaf & Ruhullah Mehdi

Omar Abdullah as

Srinagar, Oct 27, 2025
J&K Chief Minister Omar Abdullah said on Monday that there is no comparison between the senior National Conference (NC) leader and MP Mian Altaf Ahmad and Aga Syed Ruhullah Mehdi, while asserting that both his party leaders are like “earth and sky.”

Omar told a press conference in Srinagar today that there is no comparison between Mian Altaf Ahmad and Aga Syed Ruhullah Mehdi, as the difference in the stature of the two NC leaders is like that of the earth and the sky.

He said that he treats Mian Altaf with deep respect and considers him a senior colleague whose advice he values immensely.

“My father always advises me to think before I speak, and Mian Altaf says the same. In that sense, there is no difference between my father and Mian Sahib,” Omar added.

He said that he had urged Mian Altaf to approach him directly whenever there were matters requiring discussion.

“I told him, if anyone wants to talk to me, avoid the media and come straight to me. We can speak privately; no one else needs to know,” he said.

On being asked about Aga Syed Ruhullah, Omar refused to comment. “I will not talk about him. “You people are trying to bring him on the same platform? There is a difference between the earth and the sky,” he said.

Aga Ruhullah Mehdi has been publicly speaking about the failure of the elected government in fulfilling the promises made to the people in the manifesto by the NC.

He said he cannot campaign for the party in his native Budgam constituency, where a by-election is being held on November 11.

“I cannot go to people and ask them to vote for us while repeating the same promises we made in 2024 and could not fulfil,” Ruhullah said.

On Sunday, Mian Altaf told the Halla Bolle conclave in Srinagar that since Omar Abdullah is the Chief Minister, he must speak responsibly and with understanding.

The senior NC and religious leader of the Gujjar-Bakarwal community had also said that he would not tell Omar Abdullah that his government was working in the right direction, as that would be a lie.(Agency)

Kerala HC quashes case against filmmaker Ranjith in 2009 allegation

director-Ranjith

Ernakulam, Oct 27, 2025
The Kerala High Court has quashed criminal proceedings against noted Malayalam film director Ranjith in a case alleging that he attempted to outrage the modesty of an actress during a meeting in 2009.

The FIR, filed in August 2024, accused Ranjith of inappropriately holding the actress’s hand and attempting to touch her with sexual intent at his apartment under the pretext of a movie discussion.

He was booked under Sections 354 (assault or criminal force on a woman with intent to outrage her modesty) and 509 (gesture or act intended to insult the modesty of a woman) of the Indian Penal Code.

Justice C. Pratheep Kumar allowed Ranjith’s plea to quash the proceedings pending before the Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate Court, Ernakulam, holding that the case was barred by limitation.

The court noted that, as per the law prevailing in 2009, the maximum punishment for the alleged offences was two years, and under Section 468 of the Criminal Procedure Code, the limitation period for taking cognisance was three years.

“The learned Magistrate was not justified in taking cognisance of the offence after a period of more than 15 years. In the above circumstances, the proceedings against the petitioner are liable to be quashed by invoking the power under Section 528 of the BNSS,” the court observed.

The high court also referred to the precedent set in Johnson Alexander v. State by CBI (Crl. A. No. 1478/2010) in arriving at its conclusion.

Earlier, the court had closed Ranjith’s anticipatory bail petition, noting that the alleged offence was bailable at the time of occurrence.

With this order, all pending proceedings against the director in connection with the 2009 incident stand terminated.

Soon after this allegation surfaced, Ranjith, a hugely successful director, producer, writer and actor, quit as Chairman of the Kerala State Chalachitra Academy and, since then, has remained out of public eye.(Agency)

Kolkata, Oct 27, 2025
Bidhannagar Police on Monday said that it has arrested a most wanted conman who had conducted fraud in 13 states. According to sources, the person whose name has not been disclosed by the police, was arrested last night from Kerala, after tracking his mobile tower location.

He hails from Bengaluru and was wanted by police in 13 states. The police have been looking for him for five years and searches were conducted in several states. However, each time, the conman managed to escape somehow or the other. He was mainly involved in financial fraud and cheating. The accused was caught by a special team of Bidhannagar police from Kerala.

According to a senior officer of Bidhannagar Police Commissionerate, he used to travel around different cities and rent a room in a hotel where he would befriend a guest staying at the hotel. Then he would run away with that ‘friend’s’ credit card, debit card, money, mobile phone, laptop and other valuables.

Meanwhile, after committing the financial fraud through these items, he would send the stolen electronic devices like mobile phones and laptops to the ‘friend’s’ house by post.

He would even return the credit cards and debit cards to the original owner. Recently, this fraudster had bought 15 iPhones. After the arrest, the police recovered multiple Aadhaar cards, 40 SIM cards and multiple digital devices from the accused.

“We had formed a team to arrest one accused. A group was opened on WhatsApp and 24-hour surveillance was going on. After several attempts, he was arrested last night from Kerala. We are seeking his transit remand,” said the police.

The police also went to his house Bengaluru. However, it turned out that he no longer has any relationship with his parents.

“When the son got involved in the criminal world, his parents disowned him. So the accused left home and roamed around in different states,” said a police source.(Agency)

Explosion Blast-BANNER

Quetta, Oct 27, 2025
Eight people, including Levies Force personnel, were injured, in a bomb blast targetting the convoy of Kech Deputy Commissioner Major (Retd.) Bashir Barech in Turbat area of Pakistan’s Balochistan on Monday, local media reported.

The explosion occurred after a remote-controlled device planted on a motorcycle was detonated as the convoy of Kech Deputy Commissioner was passing through the Press Club Road, Kech Senior Superintendent of Police Captain (retd) Zohaib Mohsin revealed. The Deputy Commissioner was unhurt in the blast, however, one vehicle in the convoy was severely damaged, Pakistan-based The Express Tribune reported.

Police and Frontier Corps personnel are carrying out probe into the attack. The injured were taken to the hospital for treatment, with police stating that their condition is stable. Police authorities have said that explosive planted on a motorcycle was detonated remotely. Security personnel cordoned off the area and were gathering evidence.

Earlier on October 7, at least seven people were injured after a blast targetted the Quetta-bound Jaffar Express in the Shikarpur district of Pakistan’s Sindh.

The blast took place on the train tracks and at a distance of one kilometre from the Sultan Kot railway station and at the time of the Jaffar Express train heading toward Quetta through Jacobabad.

On September 24, as many as 12 people, including women and children, were injured after the Jaffar Express passenger train heading to Quetta was targeted in a bomb blast in the Spizend area of Mastung in Pakistan’s Balochistan.

Six bogies of the train on its way from Peshawar to Quetta derailed after the blast, and one overturned, causing injuries to the passengers, according to railway officials, leading Pakistani daily Dawn reported.

An explosion also took place on September 23 near the main track connecting Balochistan to other parts of Pakistan. The train was stopped for some time. However, it was allowed to operate after security clearance, as the track was not damaged.

According to police officials, an explosive device planted on the track was detonated when the train heading to Quetta was passing through the Spizend area. The railway officials stated the train was carrying 270 passengers at the time of the blast.

Earlier this year, the Jaffar Express passenger train on its way from Quetta to Peshawar was hijacked by the Baloch Liberation Army’s (BLA) Majeed Brigade, and over 400 people were taken as hostages. The train was forced to come to a halt on March 11 after blowing off the track in the Dhabar area of Bolan Pass in Balochistan.

Security forces and the railway authorities had confirmed that the train had come under attack near Tunnel No 8 of the Bolan Pass. The standoff had ended after more than 24 hours. The BLA claimed to have killed at least 20 of the abducted security personnel after checking their IDs.(Agency)

Bengaluru Police Inspector suspended over rape allegation

Suspended-banner-Black

Bengaluru, Oct 27, 2025
The Karnataka Police Department has suspended a Police Inspector who has been accused of rape by a woman belonging to a minority community. An Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) named in the case has also been suspended.

Bengaluru Police Commissioner Seemanth Kumar Singh, speaking to the media on Monday, confirmed the suspensions and stated that an investigation against both officers is underway.

A 36-year-old woman had filed a rape complaint against D.J. Halli Police Inspector H.B. Sunil on last Wednesday with Karnataka DGP and IGP M.A. Saleem, seeking legal action against him. The woman, belonging to a minority community, has alleged that Inspector Sunil committed the crime after promising to marry her.

The complainant has also stated that the accused has been issuing life threats and blackmailing her with leaking private videos.

Speaking to the media, the victim said, “I had gone to the D.J. Halli police station in Bengaluru one-and-a-half years ago. Inspector Sunil attended to my complaint and assured me that I would get my money back soon. He also informed Assistant Sub-Inspector Prakash about the case. I could not get along with officer Prakash, so I requested the inspector to assign another officer. The accused agreed, and later we became close.”

“We started exchanging messages and pleasantries, and he asked about my background. I told him that many years ago I was in love with someone, and after that breakup, I had not thought about marriage,” she said.

The victim further stated, “He promised to marry me through a registered marriage and also asked me to look for a house for us in the police station area. A month after we got to know each other, he told me that his wife was not at home and invited me to his house. He sent me the location, and when I went there, he had arranged liquor and a small party. He asked me not to look for any other partner and said that we would be together and cheated me.”

In her complaint, the victim stated, “During our first meeting, he took my personal number. The next day, he saw my phone status and sent me a nice message. I replied with a ‘thank you’. After that, he kept texting me continuously. Although I was reluctant, I replied to his messages. He started inviting me to drink and party. He sent me his house location again, saying his wife had gone out for 10 days. I took a cab and went to his place.”

“He forced me to drink, took me to his bedroom, and had physical relations with me. Around 5 a.m., he booked a cab and sent me home. Later, in the month of February, Sunil asked me to come to a hotel opposite Manyata Tech Park. I went there in an auto. Inside the room, he made me drink alcohol and again had physical relations with me. He was in his police uniform when I met him in the hotel,” she alleged.

“Since I needed his help to resolve my complaint, I agreed to whatever he said. He used to message me every day and make video calls,” she added.

“During this period, he promised to open a beauty parlour in my name, buy me a flat worth Rs 50 to 60 lakh, and marry me. Later, he went to Belagavi on duty but continued to call, text, and video call me. After returning, he asked me to come to his flat located on the 14th floor,” she stated.

“A few days later, I reminded him that he was not keeping his promises. He neither married me nor bought a flat or set up a parlour for me. Instead, he was just using me as he wished. The accused threatened me with life if I disclose the matter,” she said in her complaint.

The victim has also attached screen shots of conversations between her and the accused inspector.(Agency)

‘Don’t they read newspapers?’: SC summons Chief Secys of states, UTs over non-compliance of directions on stray dogs

Supreme court India

New Delhi, Oct 27, 2025
The Supreme Court on Monday summoned the Chief Secretaries of all states and Union Territories — except West Bengal and Telangana — for failing to file compliance affidavits pursuant to its previous directions on stray dog management.

A bench of Justices Vikram Nath, Sandeep Mehta, and N.V. Anjaria expressed displeasure that, despite clear directions issued in August this year, most state governments had failed to file compliance affidavits detailing steps taken to implement the Animal Birth Control (ABC) Rules, 2023.

“Didn’t the officers read newspapers or social media? Haven’t they read…even if they are not served, the affidavit should have been here. All Chief Secretaries remain present here on November 3,” the Justice Nath-led Bench remarked.

The apex court noted that only the West Bengal and Telangana governments and the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) had filed compliance affidavits.

“Continuous incidents are happening, and the image of the country is being shown as down in the eyes of foreign nations. We are also reading news reports,” the bench observed.

It also took exception to the slew of intervention applications filed by various residents’ welfare associations (RWAs) and individuals seeking to be made parties to the case.

“If all RWAs want to be a party, how many crores of parties will we have here before us?” remarked the Justice Nath-led Bench, adding: “Make suggestions which are reasonable.”

The Supreme Court cautioned that coercive steps and costs would be imposed if the Chief Secretaries failed to appear on the next date.

Observing that the report by the MCD would not suffice, the Justice Nath-led Bench sought an explanation from the Chief Secretary of Delhi as to why a compliance affidavit had not been filed earlier.

“Chief Secretary to come up with an explanation…otherwise, cost may be imposed and coercive steps will be taken,” the apex court said.

In an order passed on August 22, the Supreme Court had directed all states and Union Territories to report on their implementation of the ABC Rules, including details of sterilisation programmes, vaccination drives, and infrastructure available for dog shelters and pounds.

The matter will be heard next on November 3, when the Chief Secretaries are required to personally appear before the apex court.(Agency)

Gangster Lawrence Bishnoi’s name etched on Tipu Sultan’s summer palace wall near Bengaluru; tourists demand action

Lawrence-Bishnoi

Bengaluru, Oct 27, 2025
The incident of miscreants etching the name of gangster Lawrence Bishnoi on the wall of Tipu Sultan’s summer palace, once the residence of the erstwhile ruler of the Mysuru kingdom, came to light on Monday. Tipu Sultan’s summer palace is located atop Nandi Hills on the outskirts of Bengaluru.

It is suspected that the miscreants etched the gangster’s name using a stone or some hard object.

The palace comes under the Department of Archaeology. The words ‘Lawrence Bishnoi’ have been etched in bold letters on the front side of the summer palace.

The act was carried out despite the installation of multiple CCTV cameras on the premises. Tourists and locals have strongly objected to the incident. The summer palace, located on the northern side of Nandi Hills, was once used by Tipu Sultan as a retreat during the summer months.

Mohammad Abdulla, a visitor, said, “We had come to visit Nandi Hills and see Tipu Sultan’s summer palace, but we were shocked to see the name of a gangster like Lawrence Bishnoi here. Visitors could get confused, as there is no clear sign anywhere identifying this building as Tipu Sultan’s summer palace — only a board at the main entry.”

“This needs to be corrected, and those responsible must be punished. Authorities should also restrict entry to the terrace,” he demanded.

Another tourist, Mahantesh, said, “Such acts should not be committed at tourist spots. The Archaeology Department must take proper measures to preserve the monument and take strict action against those involved.”

Lawrence Bishnoi, from Punjab, heads the so-called “Bishnoi gang”, a transnational organised crime syndicate linked to murders, extortion, weapons and drug trafficking. He is accused of running his network from jail, with associates operating in India and abroad including Canada.

Canada declared the Bishnoi gang a terrorist entity in September 2025, citing its involvement in high-profile killings and intimidation of diaspora communities. In northern India, the gang is being linked to plots including planned terror attacks in Delhi and Gwalior ahead of August 15.

Tipu Sultan (1751–1799), also known as the ‘Tiger of Mysore’, was the ruler of the Kingdom of Mysore in South India and one of the most prominent figures in 18th-century Indian history.

After Hyder Ali’s death in 1782, Tipu Sultan succeeded him as ruler. He was known for his administrative reforms, military innovation, and resistance against British colonial expansion.(Agency)

SKY’s free-spirited character perfectly matches T20 cricket’s essence: Gambhir

Suryakumar Yadav Indian Batsman

Canberra, Oct 27, 2025
India head coach Gautam Gambhir has said about his leadership philosophy and the evolving partnership with captain Suryakumar Yadav, saying that his role in the side is to simple advise the right-handed batter in a fair manner and based on his reading of the game.

Since taking over after India won 2024 Men’s T20 World Cup, Suryakumar and Gambhir have been a formidable captain-coach pair. Under the duo, India has taken its batting tempo to the next level, while winning series constantly and recently won the Men’s T20 Asia Cup in the UAE. The duo will join forces when India plays a five-match T20I series in Australia, starting at the Manuka Oval on Wednesday.

“Surya is a great human being, and good humans make good leaders. While he speaks highly of me, my role is simply to advise him fairly based on my reading of the game.

Ultimately, this is his team. His free-spirited character perfectly matches T20 cricket’s essence, it’s about freedom and expression. Your off-field personality reflects on the field and in the dressing room, and Surya has maintained this atmosphere brilliantly over the past 1.5 years,” said Gambhir on JioStar.

He also emphasised that India’s T20I strategy under Suryakumar is built on embracing risk, especially in high-pressure matches. “From our first conversation, we agreed: we will not fear losing. I don’t aim to be the most successful coach; I want us to be the most fearless team. In big games like the Asia Cup final, I told the players it’s okay to drop a catch, play a bad shot, or bowl a poor delivery.”

“Human beings make mistakes. Only the opinions of those in the dressing room matter. Surya and I consistently agree: we will never fear mistakes. The bigger the game, the more fearless and aggressive we must be. A conservative approach only gives the opposition an advantage. With the talent we have, if we play fearlessly, we will be fine,” he added.

Barring an unbeaten 47 in the Asia Cup league game against Pakistan, Suryakumar had a horror tournament via scores of 7 not out, 0, 5, 12 and 1. But Gambhir said he isn’t much concerned about Suryakumar’s recent low returns with the bat.

“Honestly, Surya’s batting form doesn’t concern me because we have committed to an ultra-aggressive template in our dressing room. When you embrace this philosophy, failures are inevitable. It would be easy for Surya to score 40 runs off 30 balls and avoid criticism, but we have collectively decided that it’s acceptable to fail while pursuing this approach.

Currently, Abhishek Sharma is in good form and has maintained it throughout the Asia Cup. When Surya finds his rhythm, he will shoulder the responsibility accordingly.

“In T20 cricket, our focus isn’t on individual runs but on the brand of cricket we want to play. With our aggressive style, batters may fail more often, but impact ultimately matters more than mere runs,” he concluded.(Agency)

Two-time Olympic medallist P.V Sindhu has decided to withdraw from all remaining BWF Tour 2025 events, saying she has not yet fully recovered from a foot injury she sustained during the European leg.

“The foot injury I sustained before the European leg has not fully recovered, and while it is never easy to accept, injuries are an inseparable part of every athlete’s journey. They test your resilience and patience, but they also spark the fire to come back stronger.
