Ashwin likely to enter IPL mini-auction after parting ways with Chennai Super Kings

Ravichandran Ashwin CSK Cricketer

New Delhi, Aug 8, 2025
Less than a year after a much talked about reunion with the Chennai Super Kings (CSK), veteran off-spinner Ravichandran is likely to enter the mini auction ahead of the 2026 season of the Indian Premier League (IPL) after parting ways with the five-time championship winning side.

Sources tracking the development have confirmed to IANS on Friday that Ashwin is indeed moving on from CSK, a franchise who he represented from 2008-2015 and became a two-time IPL winner. “It’s all but certain that he will be released by CSK whenever retention dates are announced. He will be only entering the auction pool,” further said the sources.

In last year’s mega auction, Ashwin was picked by CSK for INR 9.75 crore, marking his return to his home franchise after turning out for Delhi Capitals, Punjab Kings, and Rajasthan Royals. In IPL 2025, where CSK had a bottom-place finish, Ashwin played nine games – picking only seven wickets at a high economy rate of 9.13 and was even left out of the starting eleven at one point due to his underwhelming returns.

Ashwin, who retired from international cricket after the Brisbane Test against Australia in last year’s Border-Gavaskar Trophy series, is also serving as the head of CSK’s High Performance Centre and the Super Kings Academy.

If he goes on to join another franchise, then he will have to give up on the dual posts due to conflict of interest ruling, though sources have said there’s been no clarity yet on this front. Presently, MS Dhoni and Ruturaj Gaikwad – the former and current CSK skippers – are in Chennai to meet with franchise officials and set the roadmap for the upcoming season.

A veteran of 221 IPL matches, Ashwin has picked up 187 wickets at a tidy economy rate of 7.29. He has also scored 833 runs at a strike rate of 118 – which still makes him a valuable asset for franchises who would be seeking a highly experienced campaigner, apart from boosting their spin-bowling department.(Agency)

Haryana CM to preside over Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan

Nayab Singh Saini Haryana CM 1

Chandigarh, Aug 8, 2025
The Haryana government has decided to organise a state-level function in Panchkula on August 13 to mark the fifth anniversary of the Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan (NMBA), as part of a comprehensive 31-day campaign.

Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini will preside over the function.

A mass pledge against drug abuse will also be administered to school and college students at the district level.

This was said on Friday at a meeting chaired by Chief Secretary Anurag Rastogi to review the NMBA launched in the state.

Rastogi said the campaign aims to build a mass movement against drug addiction by engaging citizens through pledges, educational activities, and community participation.

The Social Justice, Empowerment, Welfare of Scheduled Castes and Backward Classes and Antyodaya (SEWA) Department is serving as the nodal agency, steering the campaign at both state and district levels.

The campaign, which began on August 1, involves multiple departments and institutions, including the Narcotics Control Bureau, Youth Affairs, Health, Education, Women and Child Development, Panchayati Raj Institutions, and Urban Local Bodies, to spread awareness at the grassroots, particularly in rural areas.

Additional Chief Secretary of SEWA Department, G. Anupama, told that a wide variety of public engagement activities are being undertaken as part of the campaign.

These include pledge ceremonies, rallies, awareness seminars, ‘nukkad nataks’ (street plays), flash mobs, walkathons, yoga sessions, and creative competitions such as essay writing, slogan crafting, poster design, and rangoli making.

The campaign focuses on mobilising students in schools and colleges, youth volunteers, government employees, and the public to take part and become active partners in Haryana’s fight against drug addiction.

The online pledge can be taken via the official NMBA portal, with QR codes prominently displayed in public places like police stations, educational institutions, bus stands, and places of worship.

Offline participation is being facilitated through printed pledge forms distributed during school assemblies, awareness rallies, and other community events.(Agency)

HM Amit Shah slams Rahul Gandhi, Lalu Prasad Yadav over voter list objections; defends SIR

HM Amit Shah BJP 2

Patna, Aug 8, 2025
Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Friday hit out at Leader of the Opposition (LoP) Rahul Gandhi and RJD chief Lalu Prasad Yadav for opposing the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the voter list, accusing them of protecting infiltrator vote banks.

Addressing a public rally in Sitamarhi, Shah said, “The Constitution of India does not give voting rights to anyone not born in this country. Rahul Gandhi is roaming with the Constitution book, but I urge him to read it carefully. Infiltrators have no right to participate in our elections. They are your vote bank, and that’s why you are protesting.”

Shah reminded the opposition that voter list revisions were not new, claiming, “It was your great-grandfather Jawaharlal Nehru who started this process. You are losing election after election, and now you are giving excuses in advance for losing Bihar too. The formation of the NDA government in Bihar is certain.”

Urging the crowd to back the SIR exercise, Shah alleged that the RJD and Congress feared losing votes once “intruders” were removed from the rolls.

“As long as Narendra Modi’s government is in power, you will not succeed in making intruders citizens,” he declared.

Responding to RJD’s charge that the Centre had done little for Bihar, Shah said, “PM Modi has visited Bihar six times this year alone, announcing Rs 83,000 crore worth of projects for the state.”

He also contrasted the Modi government’s security record with that of the Congress era, accusing the latter of inaction against terrorism.

“Under Congress, terrorists came, exploded bombs, and returned to Pakistan. Under Modi, we gave fitting replies — the Pulwama attack saw an airstrike, the Uri attack brought a surgical strike, and after Pahalgam, we struck deep inside Pakistan under Operation Sindoor, dismantling terror networks,” Shah asserted.

Shah said that the Modi government is committed to national security.

Amit Shah said the NDA government under Prime Minister Narendra Modi has honoured Mithila’s heritage in several significant ways, citing both cultural recognition and infrastructure development.

Addressing a gathering after performing the Bhoomi Pujan for the redevelopment of Maa Sita’s birthplace at Punaura Dham, Shah recalled that “Bihar Kokila” late Sharda Sinha was awarded the Padma Bhushan in 2018 and, posthumously, the Padma Vibhushan in 2025.

He noted that Atal Bihari Vajpayee had included Maithili in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution, while PM Modi had promoted Maithili art and culture further.

Speaking on the significance of goddess Sita in Indian tradition, Shah said, “Mata Sita occupies a unique place in our culture. In one lifetime, she embodied the ideals of a perfect wife, daughter, mother, and Rajmata.”

He also announced the inauguration of the Sitamarhi–Delhi Amrit Bharat Express, which will benefit Raxaul, Narkatiaganj, Bagaha, and Sitamarhi.

“This is a very auspicious day. During the Ramayana era, a golden plough was used here to invoke rain, and Maa Janaki appeared. Today, as we performed the Bhoomi Pujan, rain has again blessed us — a good omen not only for Bihar, but for the entire country,” he remarked.

Calling Mithila’s heritage “a unique jewel of Indian culture,” Shah said he felt fortunate to be part of the launch of the Rs 882.87 crore plan for the integrated development of the Punauradham temple and complex.(Agency)

Gujarat: Barda wildlife sanctuary emerges as model for Asiatic lion conservation

Barda wildlife lions

Ahmedabad, Aug 8, 2025
Once a royal hunting ground for the Porbandar and Jamnagar princely states, Barda Wildlife Sanctuary, locally known as Bardo, has transformed into a vital biodiversity hotspot in Gujarat’s Porbandar and Devbhumi Dwarka districts.

Declared a sanctuary in 1979, Barda is now playing a significant role in Asiatic lion conservation, supporting the state and Centre’s vision to expand protected habitats for the endangered species.

According to the 2025 census, Barda is home to 17 Asiatic lions, a significant development in the region’s conservation narrative.

Spread across 192.31 sq km, the sanctuary hosts over 260 species of mammals and migratory birds, including leopards, hyenas, jackals, sambar, nilgai, and chinkara. The terrain is a mix of rocky hills, seasonal rivers like Kilganga and Ghodadra, and sacred spots like Abhapara and Venu hills.

A major push for species reinforcement began in 2023 when a male lion naturally migrated to Barada, following years of habitat and prey base restoration.

To strengthen this small pride, five adult lionesses were translocated under scientific monitoring by the Gujarat Forest Department. As a result, natural breeding has occurred, marking Barda as a satellite population under Project Lion, the first such effort in a fully protected area.

Barda’s rich ecological fabric includes over 650 plant species, many of which are medicinal or critical to the forest’s food chain. Conservation efforts also focus on managing invasive species like Prosopis and Lantana, establishing grassland patches, and building prey-breeding centres for chital and sambar deer.

The sanctuary is also a living example of human-wildlife coexistence, with over 1,200 Maldhari families residing within. Indigenous communities like the Rabaris, Bharwads, and Gadhvis continue their traditional pastoral lifestyles while actively participating in eco-development programs.

Voluntary relocation, veterinary camps, education drives, and livelihood support are carried out to integrate local development with conservation goals.

To enhance public engagement, the Forest Department has launched a regulated Barada Jungle Safari, with trained local guides and visitor facilities like resting shelters, water stations, and interpretive signboards.

This model not only creates employment but also builds conservation awareness. Barda’s revival represents more than just the roar of returning lions – it is a testimony to Gujarat’s progressive, science-led, and community-driven conservation model.

As lion numbers in the state grow from 327 in 2001 to 891 in 2025, Barda stands out as a successful symbol of habitat restoration, species recovery, and coexistence with nature.(Agency)

Haryana govt announces free bus ride for women on Raksha Bandhan

Haryana Roadways bus stand

Karnal, Aug 8, 2025
As a special gift to women on the occasion of Raksha Bandhan, the Haryana government, on Friday, announced free travel for women in Haryana Roadways buses to Delhi, Rajasthan, Chandigarh, and across the state.

A huge crowd was seen at bus stands as women eagerly availed the service.

The free bus facility started from Friday noon will end on Saturday midnight.

The faces of women traveling to tie ‘Rakhi’ to their brothers lit up with joy.

A total of 168 buses, including AC buses, will operate under this initiative.

On the auspicious festival celebrating the bond between brothers and sisters, women, along with children up to 15 years of age, will be able to travel free of cost.

This special service began at 12 p.m. on August 8, and will continue until 12 a.m. on August 9.

Providing the details, General Manager Kuldeep Singh of Karnal Roadways said that the facility will be available in all Haryana Roadways buses during the announced period.

“A child up to 15 years can travel free along with a woman passenger. No traveller will face any inconvenience. Additional staff has been deployed to ensure smooth operations,” he added.

Women travelling to tie ‘Rakhi’ to their brothers expressed their appreciation for the state government’s gesture.

“This free bus service will allow us to reach our brothers comfortably and celebrate the festival without worrying about travel expenses. Raksha Bandhan is a festival of the sacred bond between brothers and sisters, and we eagerly await it every year,” a passenger said.

Raksha Bandhan, also known as Rakhi, will be celebrated across India on August 9 this year.

The festival is marked by a sister tying a decorative thread or amulet, known as a Rakhi, around her brother’s right wrist.

The Rakhi, often made of red or yellow thread, symbolises the bond of love and mutual protection between siblings. In return, brothers give gifts to their sisters and pledge to protect them.(Agency)

Khalistan embassy in Canada: A brazen provocation that Ottawa still won’t confront

Republic of Khalistan embassy in Canada

New Delhi, Aug 8, 2025
Having failed to make any sort of impact in India, the pro-Khalistan elements have made Canada their playground for several years now. In fact, ties between India and Canada have turned sour and fragile owing to this issue. New Delhi has accused Canada of shielding Khalistan elements who are counterproductive to India’s security interests.

Now, to make matters worse, a so-called Embassy of the Republic of Khalistan has opened up in Surrey, British Columbia. This development is a further irritant in the already fragile ties between India and Canada.

While under Justin Trudeau, ties had nosedived, a change of Prime Minister in Canada did re-ignite some hope for relations between the two countries. Under Mark Carney, relations seemed to be moving forward in the right direction. However, the pro-Khalistan elements wield too much influence, which makes it hard for any party in the country to ignore them.

The so-called embassy is located at the Guru Nanak Sikh Gurdwara, once led by Hardeep Singh Nijjar, a designated terrorist in India. It was his murder that ignited diplomatic tensions.

The opening of this embassy is not just worrisome, but is a brazen act by these elements who are part of terror organisations, narcotic cartels, and gangs. Canada has not yet reacted to this development.

The Indian High Commission in Ottawa had issued a statement condemning the move. It said that this is a direct threat to India’s sovereignty. The High Commission also called upon Canada to act against such elements. What is more ironic is that there is no word on this development from David Eby, the Premier of British Columbia.

The embassy is said to have received funding of USD 150,000 from the state. British Columbia has an NDP government, a party that, until recently headed by Jagmeet Singh, who was an ally of Trudeau and a known Khalistan sympathiser. India has provided proof in the form of several dossiers about the activities of these elements. There is ample proof to suggest that those sitting in Canada are running the terror-gangster nexus that operates largely in India.

However, Canada has refused to blink and, at one time, accused India of having a hand behind the killing of Nijjar. The question is why can’t Canada act against these dangerous elements? For one, politicians in Canada have recognised these elements not as terrorists, but as legitimate political non-violent people. Signages seeking a Khalistan state and referendums by these persons are seen as a non-violent expression.

The biggest reason for the stoic silence is vote bank politics. Canada’s legal framework places a high value on freedom of expression that is protected under the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. This is exactly what the Khalistani elements use to term themselves as legitimate activities.

Canada has also, on several occasions, said that this is about freedom of speech and hence no action can be taken against them. The Canadian Security Intelligence Service had in 2024 said that non-violent advocacy for an independent state of Khalistan cannot be considered extremism.

However, in 2024, the same agency had said that Khalistanis pose a threat. It went on to say that Khalistani extremists continue to use Canada as a base for promotion, fundraising, or planning of violence in India. This was a major shift in approach, but on the ground, nothing seems to have changed.

As per the 2021 census, the population of Sikhs in Canada stood at 7.7 lakh. This is something that politicians cannot ignore, as these are sizeable vote banks and also have immense influence in the country.

While a majority of this Sikh population does not subscribe to the Khalistan ideology, there are a few who think otherwise. Although smaller in number, Canadian politicians want to take no chances when it comes to elections.

Can India and Canada remain quiet about this and let relations strain further? The answer is no. India and Canada will have to act upon these elements.

Canada, in particular, has recognised the problem, but is yet to act on it. Indian officials will realise the gravity on when the Khalistan elements spill on the streets and hurt Canadian interests. It has been happening gradually, but the question is — how long will Canada wait?(Agency)

PM Modi speaks with ‘friend’ Putin, reaffirms commitment to deepen India-Russia ties

Vladimir Putin meet PM Modi

New Delhi/Moscow, Aug 8, 2025
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday held a “very good and detailed conversation” with Russian President Vladimir Putin over phone during which both leaders not only vowed to further deepen the India-Russia Special and Privileged Strategic Partnership but also held detailed discussions on developments concerning Ukraine.

“Had a very good and detailed conversation with my friend President Putin. I thanked him for sharing the latest developments on Ukraine. We also reviewed the progress in our bilateral agenda, and reaffirmed our commitment to further deepen the India-Russia Special and Privileged Strategic Partnership. I look forward to hosting President Putin in India later this year,” PM Modi posted on X after the phone call.

While thanking President Putin for his detailed assessment, the Prime Minister reiterated India’s consistent position for peaceful resolution of the Ukraine conflict.

The phone call took place less than 24 hours after National Security Advisor (NSA) Ajit Doval called on the Russian President at the Kremlin on Thursday evening.

The important meeting came in wake of US President Donald Trump’s decision to impose additional tariffs on India for importing oil from Russia.

Terming the move as “unfair, unjustified and unreasonable”, India had made it clear that its imports are based on market factors and done with the overall objective of ensuring the energy security of 1.4 billion people of India.

From the Russian side, the meeting was also attended by Secretary of the Security Council of Russia Sergei Shoigu and Aide to the President of Russia Yuri Ushakov. India’s Ambassador to Russia, Vinay Kumar also participated in the meeting along with NSA Doval.

President Putin’s visit to India for the 23rd India-Russia Annual Summit is being planned as part of the ongoing commitment to annual meetings between the two leaders.

“Our leaders have an agreement to meet once a year. This time, it is our turn,” Kremlin aide Ushakov had said earlier.

The last visit by the Russian President to India took place on December 6, 2021, during the 21st India-Russia Annual Summit in New Delhi.

PM Modi, meanwhile, held two high-profile visits to Russia last year, attending the 22nd Russia-India Summit in July and later participated in the BRICS Summit held in Kazan in October.

Citing that the political dialogue between India and Russia is “developing dynamically” and is facilitated by the fact that Moscow and New Delhi “have close or even coinciding views on the objectively emerging multipolar world order”, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov had also indicated that preparations are being made for Russian President Vladimir Putin’s upcoming visit to India.

“Relations between our countries have a long history. It can be said that they have stood the test of time more than once.

Today, Russia and India are developing equal cooperation based on sincere, mutual respect and consideration of each other’s interests,” Lavrov told the participants of the first international conference ‘Russia and India: Towards a New Agenda for Bilateral Relations’ which was also addressed by External Affairs Minister (EAM) S. Jaishankar in March, this year.

“It is difficult to overestimate the contribution of our leaders to this process. It is symbolic that Prime Minister Narendra Modi made his first bilateral foreign visit after his re-election last year to Russia. Now it is our turn. Russian President Vladimir Putin accepted the invitation of the head of the Indian government. The visit of the head of the Russian state to the Republic of India is being prepared,” he added.

In June, the Russian President sent a message of condolences to President Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi over the passenger plane crash in Ahmedabad.

“Please accept the deepest condolences over the tragic consequences of a passenger plane crash in Ahmedabad. Kindly convey the words of sincere sympathy and support to the families and near ones of the victims, as well as wishes for a speedy recovery to all those injured in this catastrophe,” said Putin

In May, President Putin also called Prime Minister Modi and “strongly condemned” the April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam, offering “full support” to India in its ongoing fight against terrorism.

A statement issued by the Kremlin said that Putin expressed sincere condolences to PM Modi over the death of Indian citizens as a result of the barbaric terrorist attack on April 22 and emphasised the need for an “uncompromising fight” against terrorism in any form.

“During the conversation, the strategic nature of Russian-Indian relations of a special privileged partnership was emphasised. These relations are not subject to external influence and continue to develop dynamically in all directions,” read the statement issued by the Russian President’s office.

“The Indian leader reiterated his invitation to the Russian President to visit India for the traditional annual bilateral summit. The invitation was accepted with gratitude,” it added.

PM Modi, who had also been invited by Putin for the participation in the Victory Day celebrations, however could not travel to Russia.

The Russian President had earlier extended his condolences to President Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Modi over the tragic consequences of the terrorist attack in Pahalgam.(Agency)

Rahul Gandhi repeats ‘rejected demand’ for machine-readable voter rolls

Rahul Gandhi Congress Leader and LoP

New Delhi, Aug 8, 2025
Leader of the Opposition in Lok Sabha and Congress MP Rahul Gandhi has drawn sharp criticism for ‘reiterating’ allegations of irregularities in India’s electoral rolls, accusations that Election Commission of India’s sources say echo previously rejected claims and disregard established legal procedures.

Speaking at a recent press conference, Gandhi alleged that multiple entries and duplications in the voter list compromise the integrity of the electoral process. However, these assertions have been dismissed by ECI as a rehash of similar allegations made in 2018 by then Madhya Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) president Kamal Nath, allegations that were rejected by the Supreme Court at the time.

According to sources, the 2018 Supreme Court judgment in the Kamal Nath case settled the question of machine-readable electoral documents and the reliability of ECI’s voter databases.

“Rahul Gandhi raising the same issues now shows either ignorance of the law or a deliberate attempt to undermine public trust,” said officials.

In 2018, Kamal Nath had approached the Supreme Court claiming that the electoral rolls in Madhya Pradesh showed multiple entries of the same faces, up to 36 times, based on data sourced from a private website.

The court, however, found no merit in the claim, particularly after the Election Commission of India (ECI) demonstrated that the supposed discrepancies had already been rectified months prior to the petition. The court refused to grant the relief sought, including the demand for searchable PDF formats of electoral rolls.

Notably, the Congress party had been supplied with the updated voter list well in advance, further weakening their claims. Sources say this episode set a clear precedent regarding the treatment of such grievances.

In his recent remarks, Rahul Gandhi alleged that similar discrepancies still exist, including multiple entries of the same name across different states. One example he cited was a voter named Aditya Srivastava, allegedly listed in three different State rolls. However, ECI sources assertively said that this error had been corrected months ago, and the updated rolls had been duly published.

Sources have pointed out that these latest claims seem designed more to generate political noise than to raise substantive legal concerns, especially since the standard procedures for objection and rectification of electoral rolls are publicly known and accessible.

Sources say that Rahul’s repeated targeting of the ECI, without presenting new evidence or following the prescribed legal process, reflects poorly on his regard for the judiciary.

“This isn’t about electoral reform,” sources commented, “It’s about political posturing in defiance of settled legal positions.”

The law provides a well-defined mechanism for objecting to electoral roll entries and for appealing decisions. Instead of following these channels, Gandhi has chosen to sensationalise the matter through the media, said ECI sources.

Quoting a well-established legal maxim, that when the law prescribes a manner of doing something, it must be done only in that manner, election commission officials underlined that circumventing due process undermines not just the ECI, but also the rule of law.

Given the baselessness of the allegations, ECI has called on Gandhi to either formally declare and legally pursue his claims or issue a public apology for maligning the ECI.

“If Rahul Gandhi truly believes in the authenticity of his claims, he should sign a formal declaration under oath and present his case through legal means,” said ECI. “Otherwise, he owes the nation an apology for raising unfounded allegations against a constitutional body.”(Agency)
