Media watchdog warns Afghan refugees in Pakistan face arbitrary arrest, extortion and mistreatment

Kabul, May 10, 2026

The Afghanistan Media Support Organisation (AMSO) has said that Afghan refugees in Pakistan have been facing arbitrary arrests, mistreatment, extortion and the threat of forced deportation, media reported on Sunday.

In a report released on Friday, the AMSO said that more than 3.4 million Afghan migrants have been deported from Pakistan and Iran since 2023 amid escalating crackdowns on undocumented foreigners, Afghanistan’s leading news agency Khaama Press reported.

According to the report, 68.3 per cent of surveyed Afghans said they have been arrested or imprisoned, while 96.4 per cent of detainees reported facing abuse during arrest or detention.

As per the report, 85.7 per cent of respondents were forced to pay money to avoid arrest or get released from detention facilities.

The report said that 75.6 of respondents faced threats, humiliation and other forms of psychological abuse, while 72.4 per cent of respondents were detained for more than 48 hours without judicial review, Khaama Press reported.

The organisation said that none of the deported individuals received an individual risk assessment before deportation from Pakistan.

The AMSO added that the report was prepared jointly with the World Organisation Against Torture and presented to the United Nations Committee Against Torture.

The findings were based on a survey conducted of 41 Afghan nationals with six in-depth interviews and documentation from organisations, including the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, the International Organisation for Migration, Amnesty International, and the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan.

Pakistan has intensified deportation of undocumented Afghans since late 2023 citing security concerns and economic pressures.

However, human rights organisations have said that many Afghan nationals face serious risks after being repatriated to Afghanistan, especially journalists, former government workers, activists and women.

Last month, a 15-member Afghan family, including minor children, were detained by law enforcement agencies in Pakistan’s Rawalpindi as authorities continued their crackdown against illegal Afghan nationals.

Sources said more than 5,673 illegal Afghans have been repatriated to Afghanistan since the deadline for voluntary return has ended.

The law enforcement agencies have been asked to maintain accurate, comprehensive and consolidated data of all deported Afghan nationals, irrespective of whether their return was voluntary or conducted through formal actions, Pakistan’s daily Dawn reported.

The police have been ordered to collect relevant data, verify accuracy by the Counter-Terrorism Department (CTD) and combine at the appropriate level to ensure effective monitoring.

On April 14, police in Pakistan’s Quetta arrested more than 20 landlords and shop owners for renting properties to undocumented Afghan migrants.

The crackdown targetted those who “violated rental laws”, with cases lodged against those arrested under existing legal provisions governing housing and foreign residency, Khaama Press reported.

Hundreds of undocumented Afghans were identified and arrested during the operation which demonstrates growing pressure faced by migrants in Pakistan.

Afghan migrants in Balochistan said that the restrictions imposed by the authorities have made their routine life increasingly difficult, restricting their access to housing, employment and essential services needed for basic survival.

Pakistan has imposed a ban on renting properties to undocumented foreign nationals in Islamabad and nearby areas and extended restrictions to utilities, mobile SIM cards, and other essential services.(Agency)

UP Police conduct raids at multiple Locations in Hunt for Mukhtar Ansari’s wife Afsha

Ghazipur (Uttar Pradesh), May 10, 2026

Police teams from Uttar Pradesh’s Mau and Ghazipur districts on Sunday conducted intensive raids at multiple locations in search of absconding Afsha Ansari, wife of deceased gangster-turned-politician Mukhtar Ansari and an alleged associate of the IS-191 gang, officials said.

According to police, Afsha Ansari has been absconding for a long period and carries a reward of Rs 50,000 each announced by the police in Mau and Ghazipur districts. A lookout circular has also been issued against her.

Ghazipur Superintendent of Police Iraj Raja said raids were conducted at seven suspected hideouts across Mau and Ghazipur districts, including the residences of alleged associates where Afsha Ansari was suspected to be hiding.

“Afsha Ansari, wife of deceased gangster Mukhtar Ansari, is wanted in connection with cases linked to the IS-191 gang. Raids were conducted at seven locations in Ghazipur and Mau districts. Information gathered during the searches is being analysed and electronic evidence is also being collected,” the Superintendent of Police said.

He expressed confidence that Afsha Ansari would soon be arrested and added that other gang members allegedly involved in criminal activities were also under police surveillance.

Police teams carried out searches at the residences of Mansoor Ansari, former Mau Municipal Chairman Tayyab Palki, Gaus Moinuddin, Lalji Yadav, Arvind Singh, Umesh Singh and Shyamlal Sonkar.

One of the major raids was conducted at the residence of former Municipal Chairman Tayyab Palki in Mau city’s Mirzahadipura area. Police teams from Kasimabad police station in Ghazipur and Dakshin Tola police station in Mau reached the premises with a heavy police force at around 9 a.m. and conducted a search operation lasting nearly an hour.

Women police personnel separately questioned women members of the household and verified their identities, but no clue regarding Afsha Ansari was found. Police later returned without making any arrest.

The raids triggered panic among supporters and associates linked to Mukhtar Ansari in the region.

According to police records, Afsha Ansari, a resident of Yusufpur in the Mohammadabad area of Ghazipur district, faces multiple criminal cases.

Several cases, including those related to fraud, forgery, the Prevention of Damage to Public Property Act, the Gangsters Act and Section 174-A of the IPC, have been registered against her at Dakshin Tola police station in Mau. Around 10 other cases are also reportedly registered against her at various police stations in Ghazipur district.

Following the raid, Tayyab Palki termed the police action politically motivated. He claimed that despite cooperating with investigators, police personnel entered the house and questioned women members of the family.

“My association with Mukhtar Ansari was only political. I never had any direct connection with the family,” he said, alleging that political rivals were behind the repeated police action against him.

Meanwhile, Mau Circle Officer Krish Rajpoot confirmed that a joint team of Mau and Ghazipur Police conducted raids in the Dakshin Tola area to trace and arrest the wanted accused.(Agency)

Home Minister Amit Shah reviews preparedness to deal with heatwaves, floods

HM Amit Shah BJP 3

New Delhi, May 10, 2026

Union Home Minister Amit Shah reviewed the country’s preparedness to deal with potential floods and heatwaves and directed an National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) study to find out how many states are following the guidelines for dealing with forest fires, heatwaves and floods, an official said on Sunday.

Addressing the meeting, Home Minister Amit Shah said that at least 60 lakes should be included in the plan to develop an early warning system for 30 high-risk lakes in Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Arunachal Pradesh, and Sikkim with the support of the NDMA.

The Union Minister also said that there should be an integrated system for flood forecasting at both the Centre and state levels, a statement said.

He added that Flood Crisis Management Teams (FCMTs) should be constituted and activated in every state of the country.

He said that the guidelines issued by the NDMA for disasters have led to better awareness and the development of a “Whole of Government” approach, but reviewing compliance with these guidelines at the state, district, and municipal levels can further strengthen their implementation.

Union Minister Shah added that the NDMA should conduct a study to assess how many states are following the Ministry of Home Affairs’ directives and the NDMA guidelines for dealing with forest fires, heatwaves, and floods.

The meeting was attended by the Union Jal Shakti Minister C.R. Paatil, the Union Home Secretary Govind Mohan, Secretaries and senior officials of various Ministries, members and heads of departments of the NDMA and the Director Generals of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF).

It was also attended by officials of the India Meteorological Department, the Chairpersons of the National Highways Authority of India and the Central Water Commission, as well as senior officials from the National Remote Sensing Centre and other concerned departments.

“The Union Home Minister said that under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, efforts must be made to implement the vision of Zero Casualty Disaster Management,” the statement added.

He added that greater possibilities for water conservation and improvement in groundwater levels should be explored through water storage and check dam projects.

Our objective should be to conserve water by constructing check dams on rivers while also minimising the impact of heatwaves.

Union Minister Shah said that the Compensatory Afforestation Fund Management and Planning Authority Fund should be utilised to make efforts aimed at maintaining environmental balance more multi-dimensional.(Agency)

IPL 2026: Tim David backs RCB to trust strengths, regain momentum despite back-to-back losses

Tim David RCB Player

Raipur, May 10, 2026

Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) batter Tim David backed the side to stay committed to its strengths despite suffering consecutive defeats, saying the team remains focused on regaining momentum as they take on the Mumbai Indians in a crucial Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 clash here on Sunday.

RCB won the toss and elected to bowl first against MI at the Shaheed Veer Narayan Singh International Stadium, the venue that’s serving as the franchise’s new home venue for the remainder of the season. The Rajat Patidar-led side enters the contest after losses to the Gujarat Titans and Lucknow Super Giants, which led to the defending champions slipping to fourth place in the standings.

Speaking ahead of the match, David said the team had reflected on the recent setbacks but stressed the importance of trusting the methods that brought success earlier in the tournament.

“You can obviously identify shortcomings from the games, but of course, you’ve got to back your strengths. That’s what’s put us in the position of playing so well so far this season. So try and go on with a clear mind and enjoy the match,” the Australian told the broadcasters ahead of the toss.

The Australian batter, who has often been deployed as a finisher for RCB this season, also spoke about his preparation for high-pressure batting roles and admitted the team had limited time to assess conditions in Raipur due to rain interruptions.

“We had good preparation coming into this game. We hopped on a flight, and it rained all of yesterday. So a couple of unknowns going into today, but yeah, like you say, just try and be clear-minded and enjoy the game and get into a contest with the opposition,” he said.

David also shared his thoughts on the dimensions of the Raipur venue, joking about wanting to measure the boundaries before play began, stating, “As I was walking out here, I thought I’d forgotten my golf range finder. I was going to try and give it a little zap. But the boys are talking about it being a bigger ground here. I’ve played here once, and I remember guys hitting into the grandstand. So, you know, if it comes out of the middle of the bat and you watch the ball closely, it’s not an issue. If you start miss-hitting, then that’s when it becomes an issue.”

With RCB still strongly placed in the race for the playoffs despite their recent slump, David said the experienced squad understands the importance of remaining focused on controllable factors rather than getting distracted by the points table.

“It’s easier said. I think we’ve got a very experienced playing group, and we understand what it takes to get to this stage of the tournament. And honestly, we’re just focusing on ourselves. Well, we can control, and yeah, it’s nice when you are at the top, but we want to regain that momentum, and we want to get stuck in,” David mentioned.

Asked specifically about the boundary dimensions at one end of the ground, David responded with a light-hearted remark, saying, “It looks bigger than that. But yeah, I mean, if you hit a six and it’s under 70 metres, you’d be disappointed.”(Agency)

Operation Sindoor marks major shift in India’s military doctrine: Report

Operation Sindoor

New Delhi, May 10, 2026

India’s military doctrine and strategic posture have undergone a significant transformation following Operation Sindoor, with defence analysts arguing that the operation marked a decisive shift from reactive deterrence to a more assertive and proactive military strategy against cross-border terrorism and hostile adversaries.

According to an analysis published by Eurasia Review, based on a paper by the Observer Research Foundation, Operation Sindoor emerged as an “inflection point” in India’s defence policy after the April 2025 Pahalgam terror attack by the Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT).

The report said the Indian military not only imposed substantial costs on Pakistan during the operation but also denied Islamabad any meaningful military gains in return. Analysts described the episode as evidence of India’s growing willingness to take calculated risks in confronting terrorism and its alleged state sponsors.

The article authored by Kartik Bommakanti and Rahul Rawat noted that India’s military thinking has evolved beyond the earlier “Cold Start Doctrine”, which was largely designed as a rapid retaliatory response after a terrorist strike or conventional attack. In contrast, the newly emerging “Cold Strike” doctrine focuses on controlled pre-emption and proactive shaping of the adversary moves through swift application of military power.

Under this evolving doctrine, India is emphasising faster mobilisation, compressed operational timelines, and integrated tri-service warfare. The report highlighted the November 2025 “Trishul Exercise”, which demonstrated synchronised multi-domain operations involving the Army, Navy, and Air Force. Analysts said the exercise showcased India’s growing capability to conduct integrated “sensor-shooter-decision” missions under tight time constraints — described as a “kill-web” operational architecture essential for Cold Strike readiness.

One of the most notable organisational changes after Operation Sindoor has been the creation of specialised combat formations, including the “Rudra Brigades” and “Bhairav” commando units. According to the report, the Rudra Brigades are intended for rapid offensive contingencies against Pakistan in plains terrain, while the Bhairav units are designed for mountainous operations along both the Pakistan and China fronts.

The report said the Bhairav units would act as force multipliers in high-altitude combat zones and free elite special forces for more strategic missions. Analysts argued that the reforms reflect India’s increasing focus on high-speed, precision warfare and multi-domain coordination.

The Eurasia Review article further pointed out that the Indian armed forces have accelerated acquisitions of advanced military systems following the operation. These include upgrades to T-90 tank engines, airborne early warning and control systems, electronic warfare systems, surface-to-air missiles, loitering munitions, long-range guided rocket ammunition for the Pinaka systems, drone detection platforms, and upgraded missile defence capabilities.

The report also noted the growing role of drones in Indian military planning. Armoured regiments are reportedly being equipped with “Shaurya Squadrons” — drone units intended for surveillance, precision strikes, electronic warfare, and logistics support. Though still in developmental stages, analysts believe these units reflect lessons drawn from recent conflicts worldwide where unmanned systems have become critical force multipliers.

Another key takeaway from the analysis is India’s increasing emphasis on jointness and integrated warfare. In 2025, the Indian military released multiple doctrinal papers, including the Joint Doctrine for Multi-Domain Operations and doctrines relating to cyberspace, airborne, heliborne, and amphibious operations. These documents aim to improve interoperability among the three services and build mission-centric readiness.

The analysis argued that Operation Sindoor reinforced India’s conventional military superiority over Pakistan and established what some experts termed a “new normal” in India’s response to cross-border terrorism. The report also stressed that India increasingly appears willing to target terrorist infrastructure deep inside Pakistani territory, reflecting a reduced reliance on strategic restraint. Analysts described this as a significant shift in India’s deterrence posture.

The analysis concluded that although Operation Sindoor marked a substantial doctrinal evolution, India’s transformation would remain incomplete without deeper organisational reforms, greater jointness, and faster institutional adaptation to future warfare challenges.(Agency)

Injured Lamine Yamal misses out as Barcelona announce squad for title-deciding Clasico

Lamine-Yamal-Footballer

Barcelona, May 10, 2026

FC Barcelona head coach Hansi Flick has announced a 23-man squad for Sunday’s crucial El Clásico against Real Madrid, with teenage sensation Lamine Yamal ruled out due to a hamstring injury.

Barcelona head into the highly anticipated clash at Camp Nou knowing that a draw or victory would be enough to secure the La Liga title with four games still left in the season. Flick’s men currently hold an 11-point lead over Madrid and are now within touching distance of reclaiming the Spanish league crown after a dominant domestic campaign.

Yamal’s absence is a significant setback for Barcelona, given the winger’s importance this season. The youngster has emerged as one of the club’s most dangerous attacking players with his pace, creativity, and ability to influence big matches. However, the medical staff have decided against taking any risks with the forward ahead of the final stretch of the season.

Barcelona, though, have received a major boost with the return of defender Jules Kounde after suspension. The Frenchman is expected to slot straight back into the starting lineup for one of the most important games of the season.

Flick has also included experienced names such as Robert Lewandowski, Raphinha, Ferran Torres, and Marcus Rashford in attack, while the midfield will likely revolve around Pedri, Frenkie de Jong, and Gavi.

Youngsters Pau Cubarsi, Marc Casado, and Fermin Lopez also continue to feature prominently in the squad after impressing throughout the campaign.

Defender Andreas Christensen has returned to training following a knee injury, but has not yet received medical clearance and therefore remains unavailable for selection.

Madrid, meanwhile, travels to Barcelona amid growing uncertainty after reports of dressing-room tensions involving Federico Valverde and Aurelien Tchouameni, while their star striker, Kylian Mbappe, is also set to miss the Clasico as he is still recovering from the injury.(Agency)

Italian Open: Zverev eases past Blockx, Ruud beats Lehecka to enter Rd 4

Alexander Zverev tennis

Rome, May 10, 2026

Alexander Zverev continued his steady progress at the Italian Open after defeating Belgium’s Alexander Blockx 6-1, 6-4 to book a place in the fourth round of the Masters 1000 event in Rome on Sunday.

The victory marked the second time in just over a week that Zverev had beaten the 21-year-old Belgian, having also overcome him in straight sets during the semi-finals of the Madrid Open 2026 earlier this month.

Playing on the windy courts of the Foro Italico, the German produced a composed display and controlled most of the baseline exchanges to complete the win in 74 minutes.

“I was much better than I was two days ago. I think it was difficult to play pretty tennis from the baseline today because the conditions were not easy; it was very windy. But overall, I am very happy,” Zverev was quoted by ATP.

The two-time Rome champion looked sharp from the outset and dominated the opening set with clean hitting and consistent depth from the back of the court. Zverev struck more winners and kept his unforced error count low, leaving Blockx struggling to find rhythm in the early stages.

The Belgian showed more intent in the second set and attempted to play with greater aggression, but Zverev continued to absorb pressure effectively and closed down angles with precise hitting through the middle of the court. One of the highlights of the contest came midway through the second set when the German produced a delicate drop volley to hold serve during a key moment of the match.

The result extended Zverev’s strong record in Rome, where he has now registered 29 career victories. The German is still searching for his first title of the 2026 season after finishing runner-up to Jannik Sinner in Madrid last week. He will next face either American Tommy Paul or Italy’s Luciano Darderi for a place in the quarter-finals.

Despite the defeat, Blockx continued to underline his growing promise on clay. The young Belgian had reached the third round in Rome after wins over Federico Cina and Tallon Griekspoor, adding to an encouraging clay-court season that has already included a run to the final of the Next Gen ATP Finals 2025.

Elsewhere, Casper Ruud maintained his unbeaten head-to-head record against Jiri Lehecka with a 6-3, 6-4 victory to move into the next round. The Norwegian, a three-time semi-finalist in Rome, will next take on either Lorenzo Musetti or Francisco Cerundolo.

The Norwegian has advanced to the Round of 16 at a clay-court Masters 1000 event once more, marking this stage in nine of his last ten clay-court tournaments in this category. Additionally, he achieved his second victory over a top 20 player in 2026 by defeating world No. 6 Alex de Minaur of Australia at the United Cup.

Ruud will face the winner of the Lorenzo Musetti vs Francisco Cerúndolo clash in his next game.(Agency)

La Liga: Real Madrid suffer Kylian Mbappe blow ahead of crucial Barcelona clash

Kylian-Mbappe

Barcelona, May 10, 2026

Spanish giant Real Madrid will be without star forward Kylian Mbappe for Sunday’s crucial El Clásico against FC Barcelona after the Frenchman failed to recover fully from a muscle injury in his left leg.

The absence of Mbappe is a major setback for Madrid heading into a match that could effectively hand Barcelona the La Liga title. Hansi Flick’s side enters the clash at Camp Nou with an 11-point lead over their historic rivals and needs only a draw to secure the championship with four games remaining in the season.

Mbappe, who netted a hat-trick in last season’s Clasico in Barcelona despite Madrid ending up on the losing side, had been racing against time to regain fitness. However, the striker was unable to complete Saturday’s training session at Valdebebas and later failed a final fitness assessment on Sunday morning.

The club has decided not to risk aggravating the injury, particularly with Madrid’s title hopes virtually over.

Mbappe has been one of Madrid’s biggest threats against Barcelona in recent meetings, averaging a goal every 67 minutes in Clásico encounters. His pace, movement, and finishing ability were expected to be central to Madrid’s hopes of delaying Barcelona’s title celebrations.

The only good news for Madrid is the return of goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois from injury, and the Belgian will start at Camp Nou.

Madrid head into the match amid growing turbulence within the club. Reports earlier this week claimed midfielders Federico Valverde and Aurelien Tchouameni were involved in a dressing-room altercation following the team’s recent disappointing run of results.

Valverde reportedly suffered cranioencephalic trauma and required stitches, while both players were fined heavily by the club. The incident has further fuelled speculation of divisions inside the Madrid dressing room and uncertainty surrounding coach Alvaro Arbeloa and his future at the club.(Agency)

IPL 2026: RCB to bowl against MI as both teams remain unchanged

RCB Team Players IPL

Raipur, May 10, 2026

Royal Challengers Bengaluru won the toss and elected to bowl first against Mumbai Indians here at the Shaheed Veer Narayan Singh International Stadium, RCB’s new home ground for the remainder of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026, in Raipur on Sunday.

There had been uncertainty around Suryakumar Yadav’s availability after he travelled home for the birth of his daughter, but he continues to lead the five-time champions in the absence of regular skipper Hardik Pandya, who continues to be monitored for a back issue.

RCB arrive in Raipur looking to arrest a worrying dip in form. Consecutive defeats against GT and LSG have pushed them down to fourth place, tightening the race for the playoff spots. Phil Salt’s return is timely for RCB, but concerns linger about their bowling attack, especially with Josh Hazlewood struggling recently. Rain limited team training, but a win tonight could boost their top-four position as rivals close in.

Mumbai Indians, meanwhile, head into this contest with little margin for error. Placed ninth on the table, every game from here feels like a knockout fixture for MI, who will once again lean heavily on the opening partnership of Rohit Sharma and Ryan Rickelton, especially with the middle order struggling to deliver consistently this season.

Historically, Mumbai have dominated this rivalry with 19 wins in 35 meetings, though RCB have had the upper hand in recent encounters.

Winning the toss, RCB skipper Rajat Patidar said, “We will bowl first. Pretty obvious, the surface is good and pretty hard. But we will try to get them as early as possible and go on the chase. Conditions are not unfamiliar, to be honest. It’s a new stadium, good supporters, and a great outfield, I would say, and everyone is looking forward to the game. We are going with the same team. Yes, we had a couple of losses, but it’s important to be in the present and play on your strengths. So we will be focusing more on ourselves rather than on other teams. I don’t think that there are one or two particular areas. Wherever it is. If we play in the Power-play or if we play after the Power-play, we will look to do whatever best we can do.”

MI’s stand-in captain Suryakumar, meanwhile, said, “We are pretty confident to bat first. Big ground, black soil wicket, and runs on the board will always put pressure on the other team. We are going with the same team. We have always had a good chat around the bowling. It’s harsh on the bowlers. We keep trying to improve and get better each day.”
