Baghdad, July 1 2024-

Iraqi explosive experts have defused six bombs, believed to have been planted by Islamic State (IS) militants years ago in the historic al-Nuri Mosque in Mosul, a police source said.

“They were homemade bombs planted in a complex way, but the explosive experts have dismantled them without causing any casualty,” Major Ahmed Saber from Mosul police told Xinhua news agency.

He said the site is now ready to resume the restoration work undertaken by the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO), which was halted after the reported discovery of bombs in the southern wall of the mosque’s prayer hall on Saturday, Xinhua news agency reported.

The IS blew up the al-Nuri Mosque and its iconic leaning minaret on June 21, 2017, with deliberately placed bombs.

UNESCO has been overseeing efforts to rebuild the mosque and other heritage sites in Mosul following the defeat of the IS. (Agency)

Kerala Police chief caught in ‘property’ sale case, court attaches property

Judge-Hammer

Thiruvananthapuram, July 1 2024-

Days after state police chief (SPC) Sheikh Darvesh Saheb was given a year’s extension by the Kerala government, a court here ordered the attachment of a property owned by his wife following a complaint of breach of contract.

The case pertains to a sale agreement entered by the wife of Saheb with Umar Sherief in June last year.

According to the agreement, the sale of 10.8 cents of land owned by Saheb’s wife in the city was to be bought by Sherief for Rs 74 lakh.

Sherief told the media that he first paid Rs 15 lakh and later Rs 10 lakh and then handed over Rs 5 lakh at the SPC’s office which Saheb acknowledged in receipt.

“Then when I asked for the original document, I later came to know that he had already pledged it with a commercial bank. Then, when I said I was no longer interested in the land and wanted the advance that I paid to be returned, he did not honour it despite several requests of mine. He said he can return the money only after he sold it to some other person,” said Sherief.

As his requests were repeatedly turned down, he approached a local court. After hearing the petition, the court decided to attach the property and ordered that when the money is returned, the attachment will be lifted.

However, Saheb claimed that after paying the advance, Sherief erected a compound wall in the property and later failed to pay the balance amount. The SPC said that it was he who had suffered a loss.

The state police chief said that he would fight the case legally. (Agency)

New Delhi, July 1 2024-

Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge on Monday criticised the Central government over the implementation of three new criminal laws, saying that the INDIA bloc will not allow ‘bulldozer nyay’ to run on the Parliamentary system.

“After the political and moral shock in the elections, Modi and the BJP are pretending to respect the Constitution, but the truth is that the three laws of the criminal justice system that are being implemented from today were forcibly passed by suspending 146 MPs,” the Congress President wrote on X.

Kharge said that the INDIA bloc would not allow this “bulldozer nyay” to disrupt the Parliamentary system.

“INDIA will no longer allow this “Bulldozer Nyay” to run on the Parliamentary system,” he said.

India implemented the three new legislations — the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, and Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam from Monday replacing the British-era Indian Penal Code, Code of Criminal Procedure and the Indian Evidence Act, respectively.

These new laws aim to “modernise the justice system” but have also sparked outrage from the opposition parties.

Following the notification of the three new criminal laws on December 25, 2023, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) initiated several preparations to ensure their effective implementation.

This included raising awareness among all stakeholders, such as police, prisons, prosecutors, judicial and forensic personnel, and the general public. (Agency)

Use of AI for self-prescription poses risk to human life, warn doctors

Hyderabad, July 1 2024-

Use of Artificial Intelligence (IA) for self-diagnosis and prescription poses significant risk to human life, warn healthcare professionals.

On Doctors’ Day, they voiced concern over the growing trend of patients depending on Internet search results even for serious ailments.

They believe that while there are many advantages of using the Internet, there are no less problems impacting everyday lives because of it.

Ease in life and potential risks, both multiplied over the last couple of years, if not more, with the entry of AI and Machine Learning (ML), which are fast overtaking our lives, say doctors.

According to them, the Internet has emerged as a primary source of health information, fuelling a rise in unsupervised self-medication practices.

AI has introduced a new facet to this trend, which poses significant risks to human life.

Engaging in such unchecked behaviour presents grave threats and may result in fatal consequences if incorrect medications are consumed due to misjudgement.

Potential dangers of self-medication include inaccurate self-diagnosis and the misuse of medications, leading to potentially hazardous drug interactions or incorrect dosages, they said.

AI works based on data input, and in healthcare data has to be accurate to the last decimal to ensure perfect diagnosis of the ailment to provide best medication or treatment.

Hundred per cent accuracy is certainly not possible when it comes to providing data by non-healthcare practitioners.

“The Internet, especially AI, is developed and dominated by the western world, especially the US. Basic information available on AI platforms could be those associated with the geography and demography of the West.

“Such information may or may not be suitable to people in India, because the information available will only be to the closest and not the most accurate,” Dr. Gayatri Kamineni, COO, Kamineni Hospitals told IANS.

“Dosages matter to ensure best treatment for any ailment, and if that input is wrongly provided, the result could be disastrous, even leading to fatalities in certain cases.

“The Internet in general and AI in particular must be seen as a support function and not as a judgment to trust blindly,” she said.

Dr B Kishore Reddy, Chief Ortho Oncologist and Managing Director, Amor Hospital believes that when someone takes medication without consulting a doctor or medical professional, he might be choosing the wrong drug.

“Additionally, self-medication increases your risk of taking an incorrect dose or using drugs for longer than necessary. And if you take a substance for a prolonged period, your body may become dependent and need this substance to continue functioning correctly. “Sometimes patients may feel some short-term relief and may think taking medication to alleviate symptoms is beneficial. But there is a likely possibility that such medication could mask symptoms of an underlying medical condition, and if proper medical guidance is not sought, that underlying condition could worsen and become dangerous over time.

“Misusing or overusing medication can also increase the risk of severe medical complications, causing harmful symptoms, including nausea, convulsions and even death.”

“Internet, especially Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning have eased the lives of healthcare practitioners. We have access to the most advanced treatment protocols, and due to the ease in communication, the risk of making mistakes has reduced a great deal in a hospital setting.

“However, this advancement is controlled and monitored by experts who have decades of experience in providing best care. It is the combination of experience, expertise, and Internet, which delivers the best outcome for patients.

“Depending on the Internet alone, without the experience and the expertise is not advisable at all,” observed Dr. C. Mallikarjuna, Chief Urologist and Managing Director, Asian Institute of Nephrology & Urology (AINU). (Agency)

Telangana HC dismisses KCR’s petition against Judicial Commission

K-Chandrasekhar-Rao

Hyderabad, July 1 2024-

In a setback to former Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao, the Telangana High Court on Monday dismissed his writ petition seeking direction to stay proceedings of Justice L. Narasimha Reddy Commission constituted by the Congress to probe into Power Purchase Agreements made by the previous BRS government with the Chhattisgarh.

A division bench, comprising Chief Justice Alok Aradhe and Justice Anil Kumar Jukanti, pronounced the orders on the petition filed by the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) president on June 25. The court had reserved its orders on June 28.

Chandrasekhar Rao, who had served as chief minister for two terms between 2014 and 2023, had argued in his petition that setting up the Commission was ultra vires the provisions of the Commission of Inquiry Act-1952 and the Electricity Act-2003.

KCR, as the BRS chief is popularly known, had mentioned that he had written a letter to the former HC judge to recuse himself from heading the Commission.

The Commission is also investigating the power purchase agreement with Chhattisgarh and the construction of the Bhadradri and Yadadri Thermal Power Plants during the BRS government.

KCR had sought a stay on the Government Order of March 14 constituting the Commission on the ground that the commission chairman appeared to be biased and had pre-judged the issue before hearing the contentions of all sides.

KCR’s counsel Aditya Sondhi had also argued that the order constituting the Enquiry Commission was without jurisdiction since the terms of reference were under adjudication by both the Telangana and Chhattisgarh State Electricity Regulatory Commissions. He submitted to the court that the Commission of Inquiry, as constituted under the Act, lacks jurisdiction to make findings on matters already adjudicated by a quasi-judicial authority.

The court was told that the Commission had issued notice to KCR seeking details relating to power purchase agreements and construction of power plants. Since he was busy campaigning in Lok Sabha elections, he sought more time to respond. Even before he could submit his reply, Justice Narasimha Reddy held a press conference to say that there were irregularities in power purchase agreements and the construction of power plants.

The Advocate General A. Sudarshan Reddy had dismissed the contention of the petitioner’s counsel that the Commission was biased.

He had argued that the former chief minister’s petition was not maintainable and misconceived and liable to be dismissed at the admission stage. He said that a public notice was issued, inviting objections to forming the Commission but drew no response. (Agency)

Successor of Dravid to be announced soon, VVS to coach on Zimbabwe tour: BCCI

Rahul Dravid

Bridgetown, July 1 2024-

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) secretary, Jay Shah announced on Monday that the Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC) has shortlisted two names for the men’s team head coach role. The final decision is expected to be made soon, marking the end of Rahul Dravid’s tenure as head coach.

The Indian cricket team is set to welcome a new head coach for the upcoming limited-overs series in Sri Lanka, commencing later this month as former opener Gautam Gambhir and former India women’s coach W.V. Raman are in contention for the prestigious role.

Shah, currently in the Caribbean celebrating India’s recent T20 World Cup victory, confirmed that the new coach would take charge from the Sri Lanka series beginning on July 27.

“Both the coach and selector appointments will be made shortly. The CAC has conducted interviews and shortlisted two names. We will finalize the decision once we return to Mumbai,” Shah said in the press conference.

He also mentioned that VVS Laxman would be coaching the team for the Zimbabwe tour starting July 6, but the new head coach would join from the Sri Lanka series. “VVS Laxman is going to Zimbabwe but new coach will join from Sri Lanka series.”

India’s recent triumph in the T20 World Cup, where they clinched the title by defeating South Africa by seven runs in a nail-biting final, was a momentous occasion. The victory ended an 11-year drought of ICC titles for India, a feat that Shah attributed to the experience and dedication of senior players like Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. Both stalwarts, along with all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja, announced their retirement from T20 Internationals after the World Cup win.

Reflecting on the win, Shah said, “We had the same captain last year and here in Barbados. We worked harder and played better to win the title this time. Experience makes a significant difference in World Cups, and our seniors excelled when it mattered the most.”

With the retirement of Rohit, Kohli, and Jadeja, India is on the brink of a new era. Shah is confident about the transition, emphasizing the strength and depth of India’s bench. “Transition has already happened with three greats retiring,” he said. “We have the biggest bench strength. Only three players from this team are going to Zimbabwe. We can field three teams if the need arises.”

Shah also expressed optimism about India’s future prospects, highlighting the goal of winning the World Test Championship final and the Champions Trophy. “I want India to win all titles. The way this team is progressing, we aim to win the World Test Championship final and Champions Trophy. The seniors will be there to guide the team.”

Addressing questions about Hardik Pandya’s future as a potential captain, Shah noted Pandya’s impressive all-round performance in the World Cup. “Captaincy will be decided by the selectors. Hardik has proven himself, and we have faith in his abilities.”

The BCCI is planning a felicitation for the victorious squad once they return to India. However, due to a hurricane warning shutting down the airport in Barbados indefinitely, the team is currently stranded. “We are also stuck here. Once the travel plans are clear, we will think about the felicitation,” Shah added. (Agency)
