One Should Not Stay Where They Are Not Respected; Captain Amarinder Singh Should Quit BJP: Harchand Singh Barsat

Chandigarh, December 15, 2025 (Yes Punjab News)

Aam Aadmi Party Punjab General Secretary and Chairman, Punjab Mandi Board, Harchand Singh Barsat, in a statement said that Captain Amarinder Singh, after Operation Blue Star in June 1984, had resigned from the Congress party and earned the trust of Punjabis. However, after serving twice as the Chief Minister of Punjab, he has now lost that trust.

Since coming to power in 2002, he took no effective steps to resolve the issues of Punjabis. He completely failed to address matters related to Punjabi-speaking areas, Chandigarh and SYL, employment and industrial growth in the state, agriculture, and religious issues.

He further stated that even when a resolution was passed in the Punjab Vidhan Sabha to annul water-sharing agreements, by inserting Clause 5-A, a major betrayal of Punjab was committed. At a time when Punjab’s waters were being diverted to other states in violation of riparian principles and without Punjab’s consent, Captain Amarinder Singh effectively regularised the outflow of water through the Vidhan Sabha and stated that whatever water was going would continue to go.

This amounted to a grave betrayal of Punjabis and a major historical blunder. Just as former Punjab Chief Minister Darbara Singh, under pressure from then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, withdrew Punjab’s petition from the Supreme Court regarding water rights, Captain Amarinder Singh followed the same path.

Although he annulled past agreements, by passing a resolution in the Assembly allowing the continued flow of water, he committed a serious injustice against Punjab.

In addition, from 2002 to 2007, by registering weak cases against the scams committed by the Akali government, he indirectly shielded Akali leaders involved in corruption.

After becoming Chief Minister again in 2017, he did nothing substantial during four and a half years except living a life of luxury at Siswan Farm.

The people of Punjab had hoped for justice against drug traffickers and in cases related to the sacrilege of Sri Guru Granth Sahib, but Captain Amarinder Singh, while sitting at Siswan Farm, ignored the interests of Punjabis and focused more on personal interests. Eventually, even his close associates abandoned him because he valued nothing beyond his own personal interests.

Forgetting the respect, honour, and affection given by the Congress party, he joined the Bharatiya Janata Party, where he is now facing humiliation. Leaders across parties are aware that he prioritises only personal interests and fails to earn the trust of his colleagues and the people. His recent media-managed statements cannot restore his damaged credibility.

Barsat said that it would be better for him to renounce active politics, live a long life in comfort, and step away gracefully. One should not remain where there is no honour or respect; hence, he should resign from the BJP. By issuing daily statements filled with frustration and despair, he should not make himself a subject of ridicule, because today he has lost the trust of all parties as well as the people of Punjab.
