The National Commission for Minorities received an email from Mrs. Rajpreet Kaur requesting the release of Mr. Harcharan Singh from Saudi Arabia. Mr. Harcharan Singh is a resident of Punjab and currently imprisoned in Al Iskan Jail of Kharj Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
Mr. Harcharn Singh was granted a 3 year work visa in July 2019 which expired in July 2022. After expiry of the work visa, the company he was working for, neither gave him extension of work nor paid him any salary and compelled him to work without salary. The company also did not return his passport which was expiring on 28.11.2022.
So, the individual tried to come back to India, however, he was arrested by the Security Forces of Saudi Arabia on 15.12.2022. He was awarded 3 months imprisonment and sent to military jail. After the expiration of imprisonment, on 18.3.2023, he was shifted to Riyadh City Police. The city police registered a false case of theft against him and sent him to Al Iskan Jail No. 2, Kharj Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, where he is still locked.
Presently, his owner is threatening him to either work in his company without salary or face imprisonment. The company owner has also confiscated his original passport.
In response to the email received, Hon’ble Chairman, NCM, Sh. Iqbal Singh Lalpura requested the Ministry of External External Affairs to take up the matter for the return of Mr. Harcharan Singh to India at the earliest.
