The Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) has secured a 10-year rigorous imprisonment sentence for two drug traffickers in an international narcotics trafficking case linked to Punjab, involving the seizure of cocaine and other contraband in 2019.
A Special Court in Jalandhar sentenced Akshinder Singh Sodhi and Amandeep Kumar to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment along with a fine of ₹1 lakh each under provisions of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, the NCB said on Thursday.
The case originated in September 2019 after the NCB’s Chandigarh Zonal Unit recovered 115 grams of cocaine, 13 grams of ephedrine, 80 grams of hashish oil and intoxicant capsules during an investigation into a drug trafficking network.
According to the agency, the conviction was achieved following a detailed investigation and effective prosecution, which exposed an international drug trafficking syndicate allegedly controlled by an absconding kingpin based in Canada along with local operatives in India.
The NCB said investigations against other absconding accused persons are continuing to dismantle remaining modules of the syndicate and identify its links with operatives in Canada and other countries.
Meanwhile, the NCB also conducted a drug awareness programme at IIT Jodhpur to sensitise students about the dangers of substance abuse.
During the campaign, NCB officials interacted with students and faculty members, highlighting preventive measures and explaining the importance of seeking timely help in cases of stress and depression, which can contribute to substance abuse risks.
Around 900 students participated in the awareness session led by the Assistant Director of NCB, where officials discussed the harmful impact of drug abuse on individuals, families and society.
The agency encouraged students to make informed choices and promote a healthy, drug-free lifestyle. Participants were also informed about the NCB MANAS Helpline (Toll-Free: 1933) for information, support and assistance related to drug-related issues.
