NAPA Calls for Educational Institutions and Hospitals to Honor former PM Dr. Manmohan Singh

January 2, 2025 (Yes Punjab News)

San Jose, CA — Satnam Singh Chahal, Executive Director of the North American Punjabi Association (NAPA), has issued a statement emphasizing that any efforts to honor the legacy of Dr. Manmohan Singh, former Prime Minister of India, should be focused on constructive contributions to society, such as establishing educational institutions or hospitals in his name.

Chahal highlighted that Dr. Singh’s remarkable contributions as a scholar, economist, and statesman embody values that align with Sikh teachings of education, service, and community welfare. He further noted that Dr. Singh’s legacy provides a unique opportunity to inspire future generations through meaningful initiatives that directly benefit society.

In his statement, Chahal reminded the public and decision-makers that the Sikh faith prohibits the worship of murtis (idols) or physical symbols of veneration.

“As per Sikh religious principles, worship is directed solely toward the Almighty, and no physical representations or monuments should serve as objects of devotion,” Chahal stated. “Instead, we urge those seeking to honor Dr. Manmohan Singh to establish institutions that reflect his lifelong dedication to knowledge, equality, and public service.”

NAPA strongly believes that honoring leaders by creating centers of learning and healing not only pays tribute to their values but also ensures their contributions continue to inspire and uplift communities for generations to come.

The association calls on community members, organizations, and governments to join hands in advancing this vision by supporting projects that uphold Sikh principles while honoring the unparalleled legacy of Dr. Manmohan Singh.
