Man arrested Months after murder of Indian-Origin woman Himanshi Khurana in Toronto

Toronto, August 9, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)

Canadian police have arrested a 32-year-old man months after the murder of 30-year-old Indian-origin woman Himanshi Khurana in Toronto, officials said.

Abdul Ghafoori, who was known to Khurana and was identified as her partner, was arrested at an airport on Friday. He has been charged with first-degree murder, officials said on Saturday (local time).

Khurana was found dead inside a residence in Toronto on December 20 last year. Police had described the killing as an act of intimate partner violence and subsequently classified the case as a homicide.

According to officials, police received a missing-person report on December 19 concerning the area around Strachan Avenue and Wellington Street West. Khurana was found dead at a residence the following day.

Toronto Police’s fugitive squad and homicide unit worked with national and international law enforcement agencies to locate Ghafoori and bring him back to Canada. Officials did not disclose the country where he had been staying before his arrest.

Ghafoori had been the subject of a Canada-wide warrant on a first-degree murder charge. Under Canadian law, first-degree murder can carry a life sentence, with parole eligibility determined according to the circumstances of the conviction.

The Consulate General of India in Toronto had earlier expressed grief over Khurana’s death and said it was closely following the case while providing all possible assistance to her family in coordination with Canadian authorities.

Legal proceedings against Ghafoori are now underway. Further details are awaited.
