Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) senior leader Bikram Singh Majithia today appealed to the electorate to repose faith in the SAD, a regional party which was known to deliver, and punish both the Congress and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) which had betrayed their trust with false promises.
Addressing a large public meeting at Pattar Kakan village in Kartarpur constituency, the SAD leader said “the SAD under the able leadership of S Parkash Singh Badal granted free power facility to farmers besides ensuring 200 units of free power to scheduled castes and weaker sections of society”.
He said the SAD had also introduced novel social welfare benefits like aata-daal, shagun scheme and old age pension scheme. “In direct contrast both the Congress and AAP have lied to you and cheated you”. He said while former chief minister Capt Amarinder Singh had promised on the holy ‘gutka’ that he would waive off farmer loans, AAP had promised government jobs and Rs 1,000 per month to all women. Both failed to deliver anything”.
Asserting that even though this was the time to mourn the Akali patriarch, Mr Majithia said he had come to the constituency in the absence of the SAD president to campaign for party candidate Dr Sukhwinder Singh Sukhi who he described as the best candidate in the fray.
He said Dr Sukhi served the people through his hospital besides doing social service. “In direct contrast both the AAP and BJP have given the party ticket to turncoats while the Choudhary family, which has been representing this constituency for the last nearly thirty year, does not have even one accomplishment to its credit”.
Speaking on the need to trust those with a proven track record, Mr Majithia said “AAP Convener Arvind Kejriwal has already made it clear that he is in favour of diverting SYL water from Punjab to Haryana”. He also asserted that the Delhi AAP unit was behaving like the East India Company by milking Punjab and its resources to spread its wings across the country. He also condemned Kejriwal for behaving like a ‘khas aadmi’ by spending Rs 44 crore to renovate the chief minister’s residence in Delhi.
Mr Majithia also took on chief minister Bhagwant Mann, saying the latter always indulged in doublespeak. “Bhagwant Mann used to speak about ending VIP culture but has deputed 3,000 police personnel for this personal security”. He said similarly the chief minister’s wife had 103 vehicles in her cavalcade.
The Akali leader also highlighted the contributions of former chief minister Parkash Singh Badal. He said Mr Badal had taken the government from the secretariat in Chandigarh to the villages to resolve the grievances of people on the spot. “Mr Badal is also remembered for his politics of reconciliation and ushered in peace and communal harmony in the State”, Mr Majithia added.
