Gurpreet Singh alias Gopi Nijjar, considered a close associate of slain gangster Sukha Kahlwan and a key witness in his 2015 murder case, was shot dead by unidentified assailants in Punjab’s Kapurthala district in the early hours of Friday.
The incident took place near Avon Palace on the GT Road in the Dhilwan area, where attackers in a vehicle reportedly intercepted Nijjar’s car and opened fire at close range. He sustained multiple gunshot wounds and died at the scene. The body was later shifted to the Civil Hospital mortuary for post-mortem examination.
Nijjar, a resident of Jairampur village, was reportedly the last remaining witness in the high-profile murder case of Kahlwan who had not turned hostile, making the killing significant in the backdrop of ongoing gang rivalries.
According to police sources, a social media post attributed to a rival gangster, identified as Donny Bal, has claimed responsibility for the killing. However, officials have not yet issued a formal confirmation regarding the claim.
Police teams from Dhilwan police station reached the spot soon after receiving information and have launched an investigation. CCTV footage from nearby locations is being scanned, and multiple teams have been formed to identify and apprehend the assailants.
Officials indicated that the victim had previous criminal cases registered against him under the Arms Act and NDPS Act, among others. Investigators are examining all possible angles, including gang rivalry and links to the earlier Kahlwan case.
Notably, Sukha Kahlwan was killed in 2015 in a high-profile shooting incident while being transported by police, an event that had triggered widespread attention across Punjab.
