In a series of successful operations, the Jalandhar Rural Police have achieved significant breakthroughs by arresting drug smugglers and busting a highway robbery gang in Phillaur area within a span of two days.
In the first operation on January 1, the police arrested two drug smugglers, including a woman, and seized 250 narcotic pills (Alprazolam IP-0.5), 5 kg of crushed poppy husk, ₹35,000 in drug proceeds, and a motorcycle used for transportation of contraband.
The arrested accused were identified as Amarjit Singh alias Pappu, son of Gurdev Singh, a resident of Ladha village, and Jaswinder Kaur alias Binder, wife of Satnam Ram, a resident of Bharsinghapura village, Phillaur.
In the second operation on January 2, the police apprehended four members of a gang involved in highway robberies.
The arrested accused were identified as Jagjit Singh alias Grewal alias Lovely, son of Navtej Singh, a resident of Gurnam Nagar, Ludhiana; Sukhpal Singh alias Sukha, son of Tarsem Singh, a resident of Surjewal, Fazilka; Sunny alias Sunny Deol, son of Bihari Lal, a resident of Khohi Mahulla Panjdhera, Phillaur; and Raman Kumar, son of Parminder Lal, a resident of Taihing, Phillaur.
Speaking to the media, Senior Superintendent of Police Harkamal Preet Singh Khakh stated that both operations were carried out under the direction of SP (Investigation) Jasroop Kaur Bath, IPS, and the supervision of DSP Phillaur Sarwan Singh Bal, PPS. The dedicated team from Phillaur Police Station, led by Inspector Sanjeev Kapoor, executed both operations successfully.
In the drug smuggling case, Amarjit Singh was caught with 250 narcotic pills and a motorcycle bearing registration number PB-08-EW-1356, while Jaswinder Kaur was found in possession of 5 kg of crushed poppy husk and ₹35,000. Both accused have prior cases registered under the NDPS Act. A fresh case has been registered against them under FIR No. 352 at Phillaur Police Station.
In the highway robbery case, the gang members, who are drug addicts, had been active in Phillaur city and along the main highway, using sharp weapons to commit robberies. The police recovered stolen mobile phones and a motorcycle used in the crimes. Seven robbery cases have been traced to the gang so far.
A case has been registered under Case No. 351, dated December 31, 2024, at Phillaur Police Station, under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
All accused from both cases have been remanded to police custody for further investigation. The drug smuggling investigation aims to trace the source of narcotics and identify other network members, while the robbery case investigation continues to uncover additional crimes linked to the accused.
SSP Khakh commended the swift and effective efforts of the Phillaur Police team and reaffirmed the commitment of Jalandhar Rural Police to eliminating both drug trafficking and criminal activities from the district.
He urged residents to report any suspicious activities to the police, assuring confidentiality and prompt action.
