Hate being spread against Sikhs in PM ‘security lapse’ issue not in national interest: SGPC Chief Dhami

Amritsar, January 8, 2022 (Yes Punjab News)
The manner in which Sikhs are being targeted with hate propaganda on social media following Prime Minister (PM) of India Shri Narendra Modi’s visit to Punjab is not in the interest of country, said Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) President S. Harjinder Singh Dhami in a press statement.

SGPC President said the incidents during PM’s visit to Punjab seem due to lack of coordination between the Punjab State and Central government agencies but targeting and unnecessarily dragging Sikhs into this issue is wrong.

“Sikhs are sincere citizens of the country, who are making their great contribution for the progress of the country. The integrity of the entire country is maintained through the sacrifices of Sikhs, who made over 80 per cent sacrifices to gain independence. Now, the Sikhs are being targeted on social media with regards to the PM’s Punjab visit, under a well-planned conspiracy”, said S. Harjinder Singh Dhami.

He said some leaders of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) are playing with the Sikh sentiments by giving statements like dwarfing/repeating 1984 Sikh genocide. “For example, a tweet made by a sitting BJP MLA from Uttar Pradesh state has come to light”, he said.

SGPC President said that the concerned government agencies and forces are responsible for the security of any top leader of the country and it is their responsibility to make timely arrangements.

“It is sad that the Prime Minister seems to have returned due to laxity of governments but this entire issue is being given a communal colour. Sikhs should be kept separate from this issue and it should be limited between Centre and Punjab state governments only”, said S. Harjinder Singh Dhami.

SGPC President has demanded that strict action should be taken against those who were tarnishing the image of Sikhs and spreading hate propaganda against the community in the case related to the PM.

“Freedom of expression on social media did not mean creating an atmosphere of hatred by targeting anyone or any community. Strict laws should be enacted against the hate crime offending religious sentiments on social media and for disturbing the peace and harmony of the country. Accused persons who did hate crime against Sikhs should be arrested and sent behind bars”, added S. Harjinder Singh Dhami.

SGPC President said that SGPC is writing a letter to PM Shri Narendra Modi regarding the hate propaganda being spread against Sikhs on social media following his visit to Punjab.
