Guru Nanak Dev University today organised a Book Launch Ceremony along with a National Seminar on the theme *“Life and Contributions of Sardar Teja Singh Samundri”* at the Golden Jubilee Convention Centre, Guru Nanak Bhawan.
A book on Teja Singh Samundri, authored by Dr. Piar Singh and translated into English by Vice-Chancellor Prof. Karamjeet Singh, was formally released in the august presence of the Hon’ble Governor of Punjab and Chancellor of the University, Sh. Gulab Chand Kataria, the Hon’ble Lieutenant Governor of Delhi, S. Taranjit Singh Sandhu, and Dr. Sagarpreet Singh Hooda IPS, DGP, Chandigarh.
Hon’ble Governor of Punjab and Chancellor of the University, Sh Gulab Chand Kataria, graced the occasion as the Chief Guest.
In his address, he highlighted the pivotal role played by Sardar Teja Singh Samundri in Sikh reform movements and termed his legacy as a guiding force for future generations. He emphasized the need to acquaint the youth with such historical personalities who dedicated their lives to social and religious reforms.
Hon’ble Governor said that the values of equality and social harmony embedded in Indian traditions such as sangat and pangat remain alive even today. He emphasised that these practices reflect the principle that there is no distinction between rich and poor or high and low, and that all individuals are equal.
He noted that such values are passed on through stories and historical accounts, which play a crucial role in shaping societal consciousness. Referring to the life of S. Teja Singh Samundri, he remarked that if such contributions had not been documented, many great personalities would have been forgotten, known only through limited references.
He highlighted that India’s strength lies in its rich tradition of writing and preserving knowledge, as the works of poets and scholars have kept the nation’s spirit alive across generations. He stated that the sacrifices of our forefathers continue to inspire the present generation, and their legacy is evident in the continued willingness of youth to serve the nation.
The Hon’ble Lieutenant Governor of Delhi, Taranjit Singh Sandhu, attended as the Guest of Honour paid a tribute to his grandfather, Sardar Teja Singh Samundri.
He described the event not just as a historical engagement, but as a deep reflection on the “inheritance of values” that shaped his own journey in public service. He recounted the unwavering grit of the Akali leader, who famously refused conditional release from British custody, choosing to die in Lahore Central Jail in 1926 at age 43 rather than compromise on principles.
Sandhu emphasized that his grandfather’s role in the Gurdwara Reform Movement was rooted in restoring dignity and community ownership.
He noted that the discipline and non-violence shown during the Guru Ka Bagh and Keys Morchas drew international praise from figures like Mahatma Gandhi. Concluding his address, the LG stated that the legacy of “institution-building” remains the most vital lesson for today’s generation.
He urged the youth to carry forward the torch of integrity, accountability, and selfless service in an ever-evolving world.
Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Karamjeet Singh said that the book being released is a significant work based on the writings of eminent historian Pyara Singh, and its English translation is an effort to take this rich legacy to a global audience.
He shared that the process of translation was not merely an academic exercise, but a deeply engaging and introspective journey for him. He emphasized that the life of Teja Singh Samundri, as portrayed in the book, is not just a part of history but a living source of inspiration rooted in service, courage, and unwavering commitment.
Prof. Karamjeet Singh further stated that the book highlights the immense contributions of Teja Singh Samundri to the Gurdwara Reform Movement and his enduring legacy of sacrifice and leadership.
He also remarked that it is a matter of great pride that Taranjit Singh Sandhu, Lieutenant Governor of Delhi and grandson of Teja Singh Samundri, continues to uphold these values through his distinguished public service.
Prof. Karamjeet Singh added that his presence at the event brought a sense of historical depth and continuity to the occasion.
