The government has asked Meta to align its content policies and enforcement mechanisms with Indian laws and the country’s cultural context, while clarifying that it has not sought any overhaul of the social media company’s algorithms.
Discussions between the government and Meta are expected to continue, with emphasis on strengthening safeguards against harmful content, improving regulatory compliance and increasing transparency around content moderation and recommendation systems.
A major concern raised by authorities is the growing threat from deepfake content. The government has reportedly called for a “human-in-the-loop” mechanism to review suspected deepfakes so that decisions on removing such content are not based solely on automated systems.
Officials believe human oversight could help reduce erroneous moderation decisions and strengthen accountability.
The government has also conveyed that content posted by prominent verified accounts should not automatically be categorised as deepfakes. Such material, it has suggested, should undergo appropriate human review before any enforcement action is taken.
Meta has further been asked to ensure that deepfake content identified and removed from its platforms does not reappear through repeated uploads or continue circulating.
Child sexual abuse material (CSAM) has also remained a key concern in the discussions, with authorities reiterating a zero-tolerance approach towards its detection, removal and prevention.
The government has additionally sought greater transparency on Meta’s algorithms, particularly the systems used to surface, rank and recommend content to users. Officials are seeking clearer information on the mechanisms that determine content visibility and influence user engagement.
