Global Sikh Council urges SGPC to address challenges facing Sikhs in Punjab

Urges SGPC members to proactively promote Gurbani, Gursikhi at the grassroots level

The Global Sikh Council (GSC) has called upon the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) to take immediate action to address the numerous challenges confronting the Sikh community, given its pivotal role as the primary religious institution for Sikhs.

In a letter to the the SGPC president Advocate Harjinder Singh, the GSC President Lady Singh Dr. Kanwaljit Kaur have urged him to encourage all SGPC members to assume responsibility and play an proactive role in their respective constituencies in promoting Sikh principles of equality at the village level. The GSC has stressed that neglecting the dissemination of Gurbani and Amrit Parchar could have devastating consequences, potentially leaving the door open for unethical conversions by Christian pastors among the uninformed populace.

Furthermore, the GSC has emphasized that SGPC members should establish close connections with their constituents and, with the support of religious preachers (parcharaks), effectively reinforce Sikh teachings. Additionally, SGPC members have been urged to actively campaign against the alarming rise in drug usage to safeguard the youth and families in the villages.

She emphasised that under the ‘Dharm Parchar Lehar’, prominent Ragi, Dhadi, lyricist groups, learned Sikh storytellers, should make people aware about Gurbani, Kirtan and Sikh history in villages and cities. In addition organize Gurumat Samagams and Amrit Sanchar programs at different places and religious competitions in educational institutions. Along with this, focus should also be placed on holding ‘Keshdhari’ sports events especially plan martial art Gatka training camps in each Gurdwara.

The Lady Singh have also appealed to the SGPC president, highlighting the growing concern within the global Sikh community regarding the inadequate promotion of Sikh principles at the grassroots level in Punjab.

She called upon Advocate Harjinder Singh to utilize his influence to urge Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann to ensure that Punjabis should not be subjected to discrimination in job opportunities. Such discrimination has compelled many Sikhs to seek livelihoods in other regions, to the detriment of Punjab, she added.
