DSGMC urges Amit Shah to resolve policy issue of pushing language subject to 7th slot by CBSE

New Delhi, January 23, 2023 (Yes Punjab News)
Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee (DSGMC) has urged Union Home Minister Mr. Amit Shah to resolve policy issue of pushing language subject to seventh slot by CBSE thereby threatening the existence of language subject including Punjabi in Schools and colleges.

In a letter written to Union Home Minister Mr. Amit Shah DSGMC President Mr. Harmeet Singh Kalka brought to his notice that CBSE has issued a circular no Skill-01/2023 for academic year 2023-24 for introduction of Skill curriculum for the students of higher secondary onwards in which Skill curriculum has been recognized as sixth subject and language subject has been made seventh optional subject.

Kalka said that this decision will deprive students of studying of their mother tongue. He said that moreover CBSE has given equal weightage to subjects like Science, Social Studies, Maths, Hindi, English in addition to Skill curriculum. In such a condition no student will burder himself to learn regional languages as seventh (optional) subject.

He further said that under the New Education policy 2020 of the Government, regional language have been pushed to such a situation where their very existence comes in danger. He said that pushing language to seventh slot of optional subject will also make requirement of Punjabi, Urdu, Bengali, Tamil, Sanskrit, Marathi, Gujarati and other such languages negligible. He said that this can further threaten employment of thousands of language teachers as students will avoid learning language as seventh optional subject.

Mr. Kalka also said that in the present scenario of teaching of regional languages in schools, the Punjabi Sikh scholars are concerned about the future of Punjabi language. He said that they were hoping for improvement in the situation but it has turned toward worse.

He urged him to issue requisite directions to resolve the issue as this can impact Punjabi the most in National Capital as Punjabi is second most spoken language in the NCR.

Mr. Kalka also apprised Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan about this serious issue and urged him that he should review this policy so as to save existence of language subject in schools.
