Senior Punjab leader Navjot Kaur Sidhu, wife of former cricketer and politician Navjot Singh Sidhu, has resigned from the Congress party, triggering fresh political ripples in the state.
Dr Sidhu announced her decision through a strongly worded post on social media platform X, in which she also launched a sharp attack on Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee (PPCC) president Raja Warring.
A former MLA who was initially elected on a BJP ticket before joining the Congress along with her husband, Dr Sidhu has remained in the spotlight in recent years for her outspoken views on party affairs. In the past, she had made serious allegations against senior Congress leaders and had stated that Navjot Singh Sidhu would actively return to state politics only if he was projected as the party’s chief ministerial candidate.
Her remarks had earlier sparked internal controversy within the party. There were also reports that she might meet Priyanka Gandhi Vadra to resolve differences, but the proposed meeting did not materialise.
In her latest post, Dr Sidhu accused the PPCC president of mismanagement, political opportunism, and weakening the party for personal gains. She alleged that internal rivalries were encouraged and claimed that loyal leaders were sidelined, while others were rewarded with key positions.
She further alleged that efforts were made to undermine her electoral prospects and questioned the leadership’s inaction against several senior leaders who had publicly challenged the party’s functioning.
“I have enough proof, but I am not interested in destroying anyone. I have quit a party where no promising leader is heard,” she stated in her post, expressing disappointment over what she described as declining organisational discipline.
Political circles are abuzz with speculation that Dr Sidhu may consider joining the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). However, no official confirmation has been made by her so far.
Her resignation is being seen as a significant setback for the Congress in Punjab, especially at a time when the party is working to consolidate its position ahead of future electoral battles.
