Delhi and District Cricket Association (DDCA) president Rohan Jaitley led the cricket fraternity in extending birthday wishes to India head coach Gautam Gambhir on Wednesday, praising the former opener’s contribution to Indian cricket and describing him as a source of pride for Delhi.
“Happy Birthday, Gautam Gambhir! Wishing you good health, happiness and continued success. Delhi is proud of its own son and his invaluable contribution to Indian cricket. May you continue to inspire generations and take Indian cricket to greater heights,” Jaitley said.
Former India cricketers Yuvraj Singh and Suresh Raina, along with BCCI vice-president Rajeev Shukla, also conveyed their wishes to Gambhir, who turned 45.
Yuvraj shared a birthday message on Instagram, expressing his continued support for the former teammate and wishing him further success.
“GG, you know I’ve always got your back and wish you only go from strength to strength! Happy birthday, brother. Always upwards, and keep making us proud! Lots of love,” Yuvraj wrote.
Raina, meanwhile, praised Gambhir’s competitive spirit and commitment to Indian cricket in a post on X.
“A fighter on the field, a champion at heart, and a man who has always stood tall for Indian cricket,” Raina wrote, wishing him good health, happiness and more milestones in his journey.
Shukla also highlighted Gambhir’s passion and dedication to the game, wishing him continued success in his role as India’s head coach.
Gambhir enjoyed a distinguished international career between 2003 and 2016, forming a formidable opening partnership with Virender Sehwag. He played a pivotal role in India’s 2011 ODI World Cup triumph, scoring 393 runs in nine innings, including four half-centuries. His 97-run knock in the final against Sri Lanka proved crucial as India chased down a target of 275 at Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium to win the title after 28 years.
Across 242 international matches, Gambhir scored 10,324 runs at an average of 38.95, with 20 centuries and 63 half-centuries. In the Indian Premier League, he captained Kolkata Knight Riders to titles in 2012 and 2014, scoring 4,217 runs in 154 matches.
Since becoming India’s head coach in July 2024, Gambhir has overseen the team’s triumphs in the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy, the 2025 ACC Men’s Asia Cup and the 2026 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup.
He is celebrating his birthday while preparing India for the fourth T20 International against the West Indies in Hyderabad. India leads the five-match series 2-1 and can seal the series with a victory.
