In a dramatic political maneuver, former Congress MLA Dalvir Goldy has rejoined the party, marking a significant reversal after his brief departure to the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP). The re-induction, facilitated by Congress National General Secretary and Punjab Incharge Bhupesh Baghel, comes after a period of intense internal party debate.
Punjab Congress President Amarinder Singh Raja Warring, LoP Partap Singh Bajwa, former Minister Balbir Singh Sidhu and some other leaders were present when Baghel formally inducted Goldy into the party.
Goldy, who previously contested the 2022 Vidhan Sabha election from Dhuri against current Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann, had left the Congress after being denied a Lok Sabha ticket from Sangrur in the 2024 general elections. His subsequent move to AAP, in the presence of Chief Minister Mann, was a notable political shift in the region.
However, Goldy’s tenure with AAP was short-lived. He soon expressed regret over his decision, acknowledging it as a mistake, and sought to return to the Congress fold. This move ignited a fierce internal dispute within the party. Senior Congress leader and Leader of Opposition (LoP) Partap Singh Bajwa initially strongly opposed Goldy’s re-entry, creating a period of uncertainty and political maneuvering.
During this waiting period, Goldy actively campaigned in support of PPCC President Raja Warring’s wife, Amrita Warring, who was the Congress candidate for the Gidderbaha bye-election. Warring himself was reportedly in favor of Goldy’s re-induction, highlighting a division in the party’s stance.
Ultimately, Dalvir Goldy’s persistence and open admission of his misjudgment appear to have swayed the party leadership. Despite the initial resistance, he was formally welcomed back into the Congress today, signaling a potential reconciliation and strategic realignment within the state’s political landscape as future elections loom. This episode underscores the fluid nature of political allegiances and the internal dynamics that shape party decisions in Punjab.
