Punjab Safai Karamchari Commission Chairman Mr. Gejja Ram Valmiki today directed the officials of the district administration, Municipal Corporation and councils to take stern action against those contractors, who were paying low-wages to Safai workers, alleging that these contractors are getting full salaries from the government on behalf of workers but are paying fewer amounts.
In a meeting to access the veracity of plaints of Safai Sewaks at MC Bhawan Sector-68 here, the Chairman said that the contractual system is like cancer for Safai Sewaks, which needs to be eradicated.
“The decision of equal work-equal pay should also be applied on Safai Sewaks”, he said, directing all departments and banks to fulfill the vacant posts of Safai workers. He also sought a report about vacant posts of Safai Sewaks in all the departments within 15 days.
Mr. Valmiki directed that the Ex-Gratia grant should be given at the earliest to the kins of deceased Safai Sewaks. He directed all the councils and corporation officials not to take any extra work from Safai Sewaks besides cleaning. He exhorted that promotion process should be initiated as per qualifications of Sewaks.
Meanwhile, Mr. Inderjit Singh, Member of the Commission directed that medical check-up of a Safai workers would be conducted after every three months besides providing them with all necessary facilities such as uniform, soap, oil and jaggery. Vice Chairman Mr. Ram Singh appealed the Safai Sewaks that they can contact to the Commission at Forest Complex, Sector-68 in case of any need.
The meeting was attended by Additional Deputy Commissioner (D) Ashika Jain, Commissioner Municipal Corporation Kamal Kumar, Joint Commissioner Municipal Corporation Kanu Thind, District Revenue Officer Major Gurjinder Singh Benipal, DSP Deep Kamal, District Welfare Officer Sukhsagar Singh and others.
