Big Jolt to Badal dal in DSGMC Co-option, Candidate disqualified for not having knowledge of Punjabi language

The nomination of one candidate of Shiromani Akali Dal Badal for co-option of member to the Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee (DSGMC) has been cancelled.

While giving details on this issue, Mr. Inder Mohan Singh, expert in Delhi Gurdwara Affairs said that during security of nomination papers held today by the Delhi Government’s Director Gurdwara Elections, an objection was filed against the Akali Dal candidate R.S. Ahuja stating therein that this candidate has no knowledge of Punjabi (Gurmukhi) language which is mandatory for every candidate.

When asked about it, Mr. Ahuja failed to write Punjabi due to which his nomination was cancelled immediately. He said that after cancellation of his candidature, five candidates are left in the fray which include 3 candidates from Badal Dal and one each from Sarna Party and Jago Party, whereas only two members are to be co-opted.

Mr Inder Mohan Singh said that a meeting of all the 46 newly elected members have been called by the Director Gurdwara Elections on 9th September 2021 in which election will be held by ballots if more than two candidates are still in the race. It is pertinent to mention that any candidate can withdraw his candidature by 3 p.m. on 8th September 2021.

He said that apart from these two members, another seven members viz. four Head Priests, one each from Sri Akal Takhat Sahib Sri Amritsar, Takhat Sri Kesgarh Sahib Sri Anandpur Sahib, Takhat Sri Patna Sahib, Takhat Sri Hazur Sahib Nanded, one nominee of Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) Sri Amritsar Sahib and two Presidents out of about 300 Registered Singh Sabha Gurdwaras of Delhi by draw of lots will also be co-opted.

Mr Inder Mohan Singh said that a minimum of 16 votes will be required to win a seat but this number can be decreased in the event of absence of some members in this meeting. He said that these elections are held on the pattern of Rajya Sabha elections in which one members can vote for more than one candidate as per his preference.
