Punjab’s Leader of Opposition (LoP), Partap Singh Bajwa on Tuesday slammed the Aam Aadmi Party government in Punjab for adopting a lax attitude on the case in which a Jalandhar-based dalit woman doctor committed suicide in SGPC-run Sri Guru Ram Dass Institute of Medical Science and Research in Amritsar a few days back.
Bajwa also demanded a high-level probe on such a serious matter.
Senior Congress Leader Bajwa said, “It was a very unfortunate incident and I am deeply saddened by this. A Special Investigation Team should be formed to probe the matter. Considering the gravity of the matter, it may also be appropriate to give the case to the CBI.”
It is worth mentioning here that a Jalandhar-based woman doctor, Pamposh, working as an intern at the aforementioned institute died by suicide on the intervening night of 8 and 9 March.
While citing some media reports, the leader of the opposition, Bajwa said that the victim’s family has already alleged that she was being subjected to casteist remarks and discrimination by several doctors. However, the SGPC-run institute has refuted the caste angle in the suicide case. A case has already been registered against 10 people and DSP level police officer has been conducting an investigation.
“A thorough probe must be conducted to ascertain whether she was being subjected to caste-based discrimination. Following the probe, stern action must be initiated against the accused. After all, she was a daughter of Punjab and her case must be investigated to uncover the reality”, Bajwa added.
Bajwa said that it is very unfortunate and it is the darkest reality of a society that caste-based discrimination still exists in the 21st century.
“Not just this institute, but the faculty members and students of all the educational institutes in the state must be sensitized on caste and religion-based discrimination to prevent such unpleasant incidents from happening in the future”, LoP added.
