Amritsar MP Gurjeet Singh Aujla on Thursday strongly raised the issue of poor telecommunications in Punjab’s border belt, stating in the Lok Sabha that BSNL’s network infrastructure has weakened significantly, affecting security operations as well as daily communication for border residents.
Aujla said that several villages in Amritsar and other border districts continue to struggle with inadequate network coverage, despite BSNL’s long-standing presence as the most reliable service provider in these areas.
Aujla urged the Central Government to immediately revive BSNL through a special support package, modernization of outdated towers, strengthening of fiber connectivity and urgent recruitment to address staff shortages.
He stressed that the communication network in sensitive border zones is not merely a public utility but an essential pillar of national security, and therefore must be upgraded without delay.
The MP added that Punjab—particularly the Amritsar border region—needs immediate improvement in BSNL towers, fiber links, and overall maintenance to ensure uninterrupted communication for both civilians and security agencies.
He pressed the government to implement a time-bound plan to restore BSNL’s efficiency and expand coverage in villages located close to the international border.
In its brief response, the government stated that BSNL is currently working on expanding 4G services across the country, including Punjab, where several new sites have been commissioned.
It also mentioned ongoing work under the BharatNet project to extend fiber connectivity to rural areas, adding that certain schemes aimed at improving border-area communication are under implementation in phases.
