The Mahila Kisan Union (MKU), a member of the Sanyukt Kisan Morcha, termed as illegal the ‘Sikh Gurdwara Amendment Bill’ passed by the Punjab government to amend the central Sikh Gurdwara Act 1925 in connection with the broadcast of free kirtan from Sri Darbar Sahib Amritsar.
The union categorically said “The state government didn’t not have the constitutional right to introduce such an amendment and this illegal amendment would not even get the approval of Punjab governor. Because of this, this political ‘Shosha’ (Gimmick) of CM Bhagwant Mann would prove to be nothing more than a joke”.
Stating this in a communiqué on Wednesday, the MKU president Rajwinder Kaur Raju said the Punjab CM should have consulted the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) before taking any decision regarding telecast of recitation of Gurbani or authority of Darbar Sahib administration.
She alleged that Bhagwant Mann has been directly interfering under the veil of Gurbani telecast in Gurdwaras’ managements, making attempts to disband SGPC, the highest religious body of Sikhs, a futile attempt to divert people’s attention, especially from the demands of the farmers and illegal activities by Aam Aadmi Party leaders and burning issues of Punjab through unnecessary and unneeded actions pertaining to Sikh issues.
The woman leader said the state government could enact a new Gurdwara Act for state, but it has no constitutional right to amend the central Sikh Gurdwara Act, 1925. She alleged that the Chief Minister had illegally amended the Gurdwara Act to create administrative problems for SGPC to administer Gurdwaras already controlling in the states of Chandigarh, Himachal and Rajasthan. It has made an unprecedented attempt to undermine the authority of SGPC, the ‘mini-parliament’ of the Sikh Panth to manage and control the Gurudwaras to which the Sikh Qaum would never forgive him.
Rajwinder Kaur Raju expressed surprise that a person, who does not use the word ‘Singh’ in his name, shaves and blackens his beard daily, swears falsely to his mother to give up alcohol and enters Gurudwara after drinking alcohol, possesses no ethics to speak about the managements of the holy Gurdwaras or have the ethical right to speak about any broadcast of Gurbani from any holy shrine. That’s why the person, who does not follow the ‘Sikh Rehat Maryada’ should think upon twice before talking about Gurmat or Gurbani.
