Kapurthala, December 15, 2024 (Yes Punjab News)

Member of legislative assembly from Kapurthala belonging to the congress party Rana Gurjeet Singh today demanded that elections for electing members of Panjab University, Chandigarh senate be conducted at the earliest.

Rana Gurjeet Singh said that the university senate is governing council as is top decision making body which has diaspora of members from different constituencies including academicians, administrators in the field of education, university graduates and elected representatives from the state legislative assembly.

The term of the senate ended on October 31 last years and process for the election begins in March month, six months in advance, but this time no preparations are no visible on the ground, added the Kapurthala legislator. In the 91 member senate 35 members are nominated and remaining come through election.

The senate is the university’s top body, supervising its affairs, issues and property. All decisions related to academics and the budget requires final approval. “This is the first time the elections have been delayed due to the chancellor’s office not approving the schedule”, said the congress MLA.

“The union minister of state for education has stated in the parliament few days ago that Panjab university is an autonomous body and established by an act of 1947 and the senate election is conducted by the university after due approval from chancellor, which is understandable, however the people of Panjab and the students and the alumni wants to know when are the elections being conducted,” said Rana Gurjeet Singh questioning the delay and seeking clarity over the matter.

By no means the university which represents culture, tradition, history and ethos of Punjab be converted into a central university, said MLA raising apprehension over the government of India’s intentions to change the character of the premier education institute for higher studies belonging to the state.

He said that the university has an illustrious past and aspiring future. “This is one of the oldest Indian universities set up in 1882”, says the MLA adding that it has been produced several coveted personalities who currently are heading several public and privately owned enterprises and many hold senior positions in the bureaucratic and political set up.

Why are we making students suffer who are protesting as delay leads to a sense of uncertainty, said the MLA issuing an appeal for ending the indecision.
