A distinguished delegation from the Czech Republic, led by Ambassador to India Dr. Eliska Zigova, along with Guneet Chaudhary, Honorary Consulate of the Czech Republic in Chandigarh met with Sh. Gulab Chand Kataria, the Governor of Punjab & Administrator UT Chandigarh, at the Punjab Raj Bhawan today.
This meeting served as an important opportunity to enhance bilateral relations across various sectors, particularly focusing on sister city collaboration which includes environment, waste management, eco friendly public transportation innovations, educational collaborations, and cultural exchanges.
During the discussions, Dr. Zigova emphasized the need for innovative urban public transportation solutions in Chandigarh keeping. She proposed the implementation of a tram system as a sustainable alternative to a metro system in the inner city.
“A tram system can seamlessly integrate with Chandigarh’s urban landscape, enhancing mobility while respecting its rich heritage importance,” she stated. This vision aligns with global trends toward sustainable urban development and aims to create a more livable city environment.
In addition to trams, Dr. Zigova introduced the concept of hydrogen buses for inter-city connectivity. These buses are designed to reduce carbon emissions and promote environmentally friendly public transport solutions.
The Governor assured the visiting delegation that he would ask the Chandigarh administration to make a detailed project report on comparative viability of Tram & Metro in the city and introduction of hydrogen buses.
The discussions also highlighted opportunities for educational collaboration between institutions in the Czech Republic and Chandigarh. Dr. Zigova proposed a student exchange program aimed at fostering mutual understanding and cultural appreciation among youth from both regions.
This initiative is expected to enrich students’ educational experiences and strengthen ties between the two cultures. Additionally, she expressed interest in organizing cultural exchange initiatives, including food and film festivals in Chandigarh that would showcase the rich culinary and cinematic traditions of both cultures.
Governor & UT Administrator Sh. Gulab Chand Kataria responded positively to these proposals, emphasizing that such exchanges would not only benefit students but also promote greater understanding between the two nations. He further emphasized that these collaborative efforts would pave the way for a brighter future for both Chandigarh and its Czech counterparts.
A significant aspect of the meeting was the exploration of a sister city partnership between Chandigarh and cities in the Czech Republic. Sh. Gulab Chand Kataria assured Dr. Zigova that he would actively pursue this initiative with his officers, focusing on enhancing cooperation in trade, tourism, education, and cultural exchanges between the two regions.
Looking ahead, Dr. Zigova announced that a delegation from the Czech Republic is scheduled to visit Chandigarh in March 2025 for advance discussions on various collaborative initiatives. This visit will further solidify the commitment of both parties towards sustainable urban development and cultural exchange.
