Actor-filmmaker Farhan Akhtar has mourned the passing of veteran actor Nana Patekar, remembering him as a “generational talent” whose commanding screen presence could instantly capture an audience’s attention.
Farhan shared a picture of the late actor on Instagram and paid tribute to his contribution to cinema and social causes.
“There are some who leave a void in their absence. Nana Patekar was one such person, whose presence could fill up a room and he was a generational talent who commanded our attention when on screen,” Farhan wrote.
“His work in the arts and his commitment to social causes remain an inspiration to us all. RIP. You will be missed sir but never forgotten,” he added.
Farhan’s father, veteran lyricist Javed Akhtar, had written the lyrics for the songs of Nana Patekar’s 1998 romantic thriller Wajood.
Nana Patekar, one of Indian cinema’s most acclaimed performers, died in Goa at the age of 75. According to an official confirmation from Manipal Hospital, Goa, the actor was found unconscious at his residence in Dona Paula and was taken to the hospital, where doctors declared him brought dead.
Known for his powerful performances in Hindi and Marathi cinema, Patekar made his Hindi film debut with Gaman in 1978 and went on to establish himself as one of the most respected actors of his generation.
His breakthrough came with films such as Salaam Bombay! and Parinda, followed by acclaimed performances in Angaar, Tirangaa, Krantiveer, Agni Sakshi, Khamoshi: The Musical, Yeshwant, Ab Tak Chhappan, Apaharan and Raajneeti.
Patekar was last seen in Subedaar, where he made a special appearance as Lance Naik Nana Waghmare. Directed by Suresh Triveni, the film stars Anil Kapoor in the titular role alongside Radhika Madan, Khushbu Sundar, Saurabh Shukla, Aditya Rawal, Mona Singh and Faisal Malik.
