The body of a 45-year-old app-based cab driver, with blood stains on his face and his legs tied, was found inside his parked vehicle in Kolkata’s Entally area on Wednesday, prompting police to launch an investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death.
The deceased was identified as Bhagwan Prasad Gupta.
According to police, locals became suspicious after noticing an app cab parked at the same spot for a prolonged period. They called out to the occupant but received no response and subsequently alerted the police.
Personnel from Entally police station reached the spot and found the cab’s door locked from the inside. A local mechanic was called in and the lock was broken open, following which Gupta’s body was found inside the vehicle.
Police took the body into custody and sent it for post-mortem examination to ascertain the cause and circumstances of death.
The area was barricaded as investigators from Kolkata Police headquarters at Lalbazar, the Homicide Department and the Intelligence Department reached the spot.
Police are examining CCTV footage from the area to establish the sequence of events leading up to Gupta’s death. Investigators are also attempting to identify and trace the last person who was seen with him on Tuesday night.
Police have not officially confirmed that the death was a murder, though investigators are examining the possibility of foul play.
Efforts are underway to contact Gupta’s family members, relatives and close acquaintances. Police are also probing whether he had any personal or other enmity with anyone and are examining all possible angles in the case.
The post-mortem report and CCTV footage are expected to provide further clues to the investigation.
