INDIA bloc MPs on Tuesday attempted to push open the gates of Akashvani Bhawan as they intensified their protest march towards the Election Commission of India (ECI), demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
Carrying Tricolours and banners bearing the message ‘Save Democracy’, the Opposition MPs marched from Parliament towards the ECI headquarters, raising slogans against the CEC, BJP and RSS. The march was stopped by security personnel on Parliament Street near the NITI Aayog office, on the stretch leading towards the Election Commission headquarters.
As police barricades blocked their route, several Opposition leaders staged a sit-in. Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, along with other MPs, later entered the Akashvani Bhawan premises and continued their protest. Other Opposition leaders, including Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav and Trinamool Congress leaders, were detained.
Earlier during the confrontation, Rahul Gandhi climbed atop a police barricade and waved the Tricolour, drawing slogans of support from fellow INDIA bloc leaders and workers.
Security arrangements were tightened across central Delhi ahead of the march, with Delhi Police and other security personnel deployed in large numbers and barricades placed at key points.
Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) is in force in the New Delhi district, restricting unauthorised gatherings, processions, demonstrations and other specified activities. Delhi Police has urged people to comply with the restrictions and cooperate with security arrangements.
The Opposition has been demanding Gyanesh Kumar’s resignation amid its objections to the Election Commission’s handling of changes relating to Form 6 during the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls. The ECI has rejected allegations of wrongdoing.
Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge said the Opposition would continue its campaign, asserting that the INDIA bloc was determined to “save democracy”.
“This is a fight; we will keep fighting, and we will throw these thieves out. We are fully determined to save democracy, and we are fighting for democracy and nothing else,” Kharge said.
