Fifteen Members of Parliament representing different political parties and regions of India have joined the country’s delegation to the United Nations General Assembly, highlighting the breadth of India’s democratic representation.

The MPs paid homage to Mahatma Gandhi at his statue on the UN campus on Monday before beginning their General Assembly engagements.

India’s Permanent Representative to the UN, P. Harish, briefed the parliamentarians on India’s engagement with the world body and its ongoing priorities.

The delegation also met UN Assistant Secretary-General Kanni Wignaraja, who is Regional Director for Asia and the Pacific, and discussed the United Nations Development Programme’s work in India. The interaction also focused on how parliamentarians can contribute to advancing the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

The MPs subsequently participated in committee proceedings and other General Assembly assignments.

BJP MPs Banshilal Gurjar from Madhya Pradesh and C.P. Joshi from Rajasthan addressed the Assembly in Hindi with simultaneous translation. Gurjar spoke before the Fifth Committee, which deals with budgetary and administrative matters, including the scale of assessments used to apportion UN expenses.

Joshi, who heads Parliament’s Committee on Petitions, addressed the Second Committee dealing with economic and financial matters.

Gumma Thanuja Rani, a YSR Congress MP from Andhra Pradesh, spoke in English during discussions on the organisation of work in the Fifth Committee.

The BJP has six MPs in the delegation: Gurjar, Joshi, Mahima Kumari Mewar from Rajasthan, Biplab Kumar Deb from Tripura, Vishweshwar Hegde Kageri from Karnataka and Sikander Kumar from Himachal Pradesh.

The two Congress MPs are Rahul Kaswan from Rajasthan and Anil Kumar Yadav from Telangana.

The remaining members are LK Sudhish of the Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam from Tamil Nadu, Asit Mal of the Trinamool Congress from West Bengal, Samajwadi Party’s Priya Saroj from Uttar Pradesh, Lovely Anand of the Janata Dal (United) from Bihar, Sanjay Yadav of the Rashtriya Janata Dal from Bihar and Rajabhau Waje of the Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray) from Maharashtra.

Parliamentarians traditionally strengthen India’s representation and participation at the General Assembly during the months following the opening of its new session in September.
