India opener Abhishek Sharma has revealed that his preparation for international cricket increasingly involves anticipating how opposition bowlers are likely to plan against him, using video analysis and hypothetical match-ups to sharpen his approach.
Speaking ahead of India’s upcoming home season against the West Indies, the left-hander said his aggressive style of batting is backed by detailed preparation. He stressed that world-class bowlers are unlikely to offer easy scoring opportunities or allow him to freely play his preferred shots.
“It’s not like I just go and hit. I know there are world-class bowlers, world-class teams ahead, and they won’t give away easy runs, and they won’t easily let me hit the shots I want to play. But as a player, I feel this is my responsibility, that I think about what they are thinking,” Abhishek said on JioStar.
The 24-year-old explained that he has recently been working with his video analyst by looking at his own batting from the opposition’s perspective. He said he asked the analyst to imagine he was preparing a bowling strategy against him while working with another international team.
Abhishek said the exercise helped him anticipate that bowlers would try to deny him his preferred scoring areas, forcing him to adjust during matches.
“I keep preparing myself, that they won’t bowl where I want. I will have to make some adjustments. They are not going to give you easy runs. So, I prepare myself like that,” he said.
Abhishek was among India’s prominent performers during the team’s recent Asian Games triumph and is expected to once again provide an attacking start at the top of the order during the upcoming home season.
