Russian President Vladimir Putin has praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s continued efforts to promote an end to the Ukraine conflict, saying the Indian leader regularly raises the issue and has “very good ideas” for finding mutually acceptable solutions.
Speaking at the Valdai Discussion Club in Moscow on Thursday, Putin said Modi had consistently raised the need to end the conflict during their meetings despite the close and friendly relationship between India and Russia.
“Prime Minister Narendra Modi is one of those world leaders who, despite our very good, even friendly, relations, and very good personal ties, constantly raises questions about ending the conflict in Ukraine,” Putin said.
“He has an avid interest and very good ideas aimed at finding mutually acceptable solutions. In this sense, the Prime Minister certainly takes a neutral position, but he is interested in ending the conflict,” he added.
Putin also thanked Modi for his efforts to promote a peaceful resolution.
“We are grateful to the Prime Minister for his ideas — I won’t go into details now — for his commitment to ending this conflict, including peacefully and as quickly as possible,” the Russian President said.
The remarks came weeks after Modi and Putin met in New Delhi on the sidelines of the 18th BRICS Summit. During their engagement, Modi reiterated India’s position that dialogue and diplomacy are central to resolving conflicts and conveyed India’s willingness to contribute to peace efforts.
Modi and Putin had also met on August 31 on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation summit in Bishkek. During that meeting, Modi said India supported all efforts towards peace and stressed the need to move from an “endless war” towards an “end to the war”.
India has consistently advocated dialogue and diplomacy in relation to the Russia-Ukraine conflict while maintaining engagement with both Moscow and Kyiv. Modi has also said that India’s relations with both sides could help it contribute to efforts aimed at restoring peace.
