Nishio, September 27, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)
India’s Narender Berwal confirmed a medal after storming into the men’s +90kg semifinals with a dominant quarterfinal victory over Thailand’s Adthapong Saengtep, while Sachin Siwach bowed out in the 60kg category at the Nishio Gymnasium on Sunday.
Narender produced a stellar performance to finish his bout in just two minutes in the opening round. He landed several precise heavy punches, forcing two standing counts before the referee stopped the contest for the third time and declared the Indian the winner.
The 2023 Hangzhou Asian Games bronze medallist, who also won silver at the 2026 Commonwealth Games, will next face World Champion Aibek Oralbay in the semifinals as he bids to reach his maiden Asian Games final.
Narender’s victory marked India’s third boxing medal at the ongoing Games after Ankush Panghal and Parveen Hooda also secured podium finishes in their respective categories.
Ankush, the reigning Commonwealth Games champion, had earlier assured India of its first boxing medal at the Games by defeating Tajikistan’s Nekruz Salimov 5-0 in the men’s 80kg quarterfinals.
Sachin, meanwhile, lost his men’s 60kg quarterfinal to Japan’s Shunsuke Kitamoto, a 2025 World Championships bronze medallist, by a unanimous 0-5 decision.
The Commonwealth Games 2026 gold medallist lost the opening round 1-4 and the second 0-5 before fighting back to take the third round 4-1. However, the judges awarded the bout to Kitamoto with a final score of 29-28.
Ankush controlled most of his three-round contest against Salimov, taking the first two rounds unanimously. Although the Tajik boxer won the third, it was not enough to alter the result.
Parveen also secured a medal in the women’s 65kg category after defeating Uzbekistan’s Navbakhor Khamidova 5-0 in the quarterfinals.
The Indian used her reach and speed effectively, keeping the 2025 World Championships silver medallist at a distance while landing quick combinations and counter-attacks to earn a unanimous decision.
