Rain could disrupt the Asian Games cricket quarter-finals in Nisshin on Monday, with defending champions India set to face Afghanistan in the second quarter-final at Korogi Sports Park.
The India-Afghanistan clash is scheduled for 1:30 PM local time (10 AM IST), following the first quarter-final between Pakistan and Hong Kong, China at 9 AM local time (5:30 AM IST).
Weather forecasts have raised concerns over both matches. AccuWeather has forecast a 97 per cent chance of precipitation in Nisshin on Monday, with rain chances remaining significant throughout the day.
For the India-Afghanistan match, the forecast shows a 40 per cent chance of precipitation at 1 PM local time, when the toss is scheduled, followed by 34 per cent at 2 PM and 40 per cent at 3 PM. The chances rise to 58 per cent at 4 PM and remain at 49 per cent at 5 PM.
If the India-Afghanistan quarter-final is washed out, India will advance to the semi-finals as the higher-ranked T20I side. India are ranked No. 1 in the ICC T20I rankings, while Afghanistan are placed 10th.
Similarly, Pakistan will advance if its quarter-final against Hong Kong, China is washed out. Pakistan are ranked sixth in T20Is, while Hong Kong, China are 24th.
The weather scenario echoes the 2023 Asian Games, when the men’s cricket final between India and Afghanistan was abandoned due to rain. India were awarded the gold medal based on their superior T20I ranking.
India enter the quarter-final as defending champions, while Afghanistan are fielding a second-string side for the competition.
