Security forces seized drugs and other contraband valued at approximately Rs 17.89 crore in Mizoram’s Champhai district during a joint operation involving the Assam Rifles, Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) and Mizoram Police, officials said on Sunday.
According to an official statement, the operation resulted in the seizure of 1,25,680 kg of areca nuts and 25,440 kg of poppy seeds. The consignment was recovered from Champhai, a district located along the India-Myanmar border and considered a key route for illicit drug trafficking from Myanmar.
The seizure followed intelligence inputs concerning the illegal transportation of narcotic substances, officials said.
Earlier this month, security forces in Mizoram and Manipur had also seized methamphetamine tablets and heroin worth more than Rs 3.68 crore and arrested five alleged drug peddlers.
In a separate operation in Saitual district, Assam Rifles personnel working with Mizoram Police acted on specific intelligence regarding narcotics being transported through the T-Junction areas of Mimbung-Kawlbem-Ngopa.
The joint team apprehended a suspected drug peddler and recovered 2.285 kg of methamphetamine tablets, estimated to be worth around Rs 1.83 crore. The accused and seized contraband were handed over to Ngopa Police Station for further investigation and legal action under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985.
Another intelligence-based operation was conducted at Iron Gate near Zokhawthar in Champhai district, a border area along the India-Myanmar frontier.
Troops of the Assam Rifles, in coordination with Mizoram Police, intercepted a suspected drug smuggler and recovered 28 grams of heroin valued at approximately Rs 5.6 lakh. The person was arrested and handed over, along with the seized contraband, to Zokhawthar Police Station for further investigation and legal proceedings under the NDPS Act.
The Indian Army said the operations reflected the continued intelligence-based efforts of security forces to check narcotics trafficking and strengthen security along the border region.
