The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for heavy to extremely heavy rainfall in parts of Uttarakhand, while forecasting heavy rain and thunderstorms in Himachal Pradesh and western Uttar Pradesh.
The weather department has placed Dehradun, Tehri, Haridwar and Pauri districts of Uttarakhand under a red alert as the state continues to experience heavy rainfall. The adverse weather conditions have also led to the suspension of the Char Dham Yatra.
Snowfall in the higher reaches of Pithoragarh, Chamoli, Rudraprayag and Uttarkashi has brought a sharp drop in temperatures, adding to the challenging weather conditions in the hill state.
The IMD said a depression over north-eastern Madhya Pradesh and adjoining northern Chhattisgarh is influencing the weather over the region. Heavy to very heavy rainfall, with isolated instances of extremely heavy or exceptionally heavy rain, is expected over Uttarakhand and parts of northern Uttar Pradesh on Sunday.
According to the latest IMD update, the depression over south-eastern Uttar Pradesh moved north-northwestwards at around 12 kmph during the six hours preceding the observation. It was located around 40 km southeast of Lucknow, 80 km east-northeast of Kanpur, 110 km south-southwest of Bahraich and 260 km southeast of Bareilly.
The system is expected to continue moving north-northwestwards across eastern Uttar Pradesh and gradually weaken into a well-marked low-pressure area over the same region during the next six hours.
In Delhi-NCR, rainfall on Saturday evening brought a noticeable change in weather, with residents experiencing cooler conditions on Sunday morning. The IMD has forecast rain in the national capital over the next three days.
Jharkhand has been placed under an orange alert for rain for Sunday. Yellow alerts have also been issued for Madhya Maharashtra, Chhattisgarh, Odisha, Telangana, Marathwada, Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, Karnataka, Puducherry and Tamil Nadu.
For Monday, the IMD has forecast rain over Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh and Jammu & Kashmir. Strong winds are also expected along coastal Andhra Pradesh.
