Assam Has Potential to Become ‘Battery of India’, Says Jeet Adani; 40,000 Jobs Announced

Assam has the potential to emerge as a major energy hub and become the “Battery of India” in the coming years, Adani Group Director Jeet Adani said on Sunday, announcing that the Group’s businesses in the state are expected to generate around 40,000 direct and indirect employment opportunities.

Speaking at the foundation stone laying ceremony of Adani Power’s 3,200 MW thermal power project at Chapar in Assam’s Dhubri district, Jeet Adani said the state had undergone significant transformation in recent years and was increasingly emerging as an attractive destination for investment.

“Over the past five years, I’ve been to Assam 40 times. But standing here today, right in the middle of all of you on this beautiful land, is a massive honour for me,” he said.

Jeet Adani said Assam could play a larger role in meeting the country’s energy requirements, asserting that the state could eventually become a major energy hub supporting national energy security.

He credited Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma with creating an environment conducive to economic growth, infrastructure development and business expansion.

Referring to the Adani Group’s investments in the Northeast, Jeet Adani said Group Chairman Gautam Adani had announced at last year’s Rising Northeast Global Investors Summit that the Group would invest up to Rs 1 lakh crore in the region over the next decade.

He said work was already underway in Assam, with the Group having invested nearly Rs 80,000 crore.

The Rs 48,000-crore thermal power project, with a generation capacity of 3,200 MW, is expected to become the largest power generation asset in the Northeast.

Jeet Adani said employment generation and local participation were central to the Group’s investment plans. He said four to five job drives had already been conducted in Assam, resulting in the hiring of around 4,500 local youth.

“ The Adani Group’s businesses in Assam will generate around 40,000 direct and indirect job opportunities for the people here,” he said.

He added that the Group intended to increase the participation of local talent as its operations in the state expanded.
