Lust Stories has never been about neat, uncomplicated relationships, and the third instalment stays firmly within that territory. Following the success of the first two films, Lust Stories 3 brings together four filmmakers, each exploring desire, relationships and human emotions from a distinctly different perspective.
The anthology opens with Vikramaditya Motwane’s segment, which immediately grabs attention with its unconventional premise. Radhika Apte, Konkona Sensharma, Vijay Varma and Abhishek Sharma feature in a story revolving around the uncomfortable idea of partner swapping. The influence of Korean fiction adds another layer to the narrative, giving the segment an identity beyond a conventional relationship drama.
Kiran Rao takes the anthology in a completely different direction with a lighter and more playful story. Gurfateh Pirzada and Sana Thampi lead a twist-filled narrative involving drugs and money. The segment balances suspense with humour and keeps the entertainment quotient intact, with its surprise turn working precisely because the story does not take itself too seriously.
Shakun Batra shifts the focus to the complexities of marriage and emotional baggage. Ali Fazal and Radhika Madan portray characters navigating lust, therapy, family expectations and divorce. There is plenty happening within the story, but its messy structure fits the complicated relationships at its centre.
Vishal Bhardwaj takes the anthology back to 1987 with Aditi Rao Hydari, Sidharth and Gajraj Rao. His segment explores sex education through a period setting and carries a distinctly old-school flavour. The quirky references to homeopathic medicines such as Nux Vomica and Belladonna further add to its unusual character.
One of the anthology’s strengths is that it does not spoon-feed the audience. Each story leaves enough room for viewers to interpret the characters and situations while offering a different take on desire and relationships.
The four segments also maintain a comfortable pace, ensuring that the anthology keeps moving without allowing any single story to overstay its welcome.
Verdict
Lust Stories 3 is sensual, entertaining and willing to experiment. It takes on uncomfortable subjects, complicated emotions and unexpected turns while allowing each filmmaker to retain a distinct storytelling identity. The result is an anthology that demonstrates how the format can remain engaging when its individual stories bring something different to the table.
