Actress Tanisha Mukherjee has sparked a debate on social media after calling women who knowingly have relationships with married men “evil” and saying such women cannot be described as feminists.
In a lengthy post on X on Monday, Mukherjee said that being involved with another woman’s husband amounted to disrespecting the wife. She also criticised married men who have affairs, saying they “lack character”, but placed stronger blame on women who pursue such relationships.
Mukherjee wrote that such women were “against women” rather than feminists and argued that they should not be held up as role models for children. She ended her post by stressing the importance of boundaries.
Her remarks drew a mixed response from social media users.
One user agreed with her position, saying anyone who deliberately damages a marriage should be called out regardless of gender and suggesting that people should avoid relationships with married individuals.
Another user, however, argued that Mukherjee had placed disproportionate blame on women while going easy on the married men involved. The user said the husband was the person who had made a commitment to his spouse and therefore bore responsibility for breaking that promise.
Other users took the discussion in a more personal direction. One referenced Mukherjee’s cousin, actress Rani Mukerji, while questioning her views on relationships involving married people.
Another user invoked the late actress Sridevi while challenging the broader implications of Mukherjee’s comments.
The post has since generated considerable discussion over accountability, marital commitments, gender expectations and the responsibilities of people involved in relationships with married partners.
