Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) President Advocate Harjinder Singh Dhami has strongly objected to a poster circulated by the US Department of Homeland Security on X that he said specifically targeted Punjabi Sikhs.
Dhami has written to the US Embassy in New Delhi expressing concern over the content of the poster. He has also urged External Affairs Minister Dr S. Jaishankar to take up the matter with the US government through diplomatic channels.
Dhami said Punjabis have made significant contributions to the development and economic progress of the United States through their hard work, honesty and skills. He noted that Sikhs and Punjabis have established themselves in several sectors, including trucking, and continue to contribute to American society.
He said the specific reference to “Mr Singh” in the Department of Homeland Security poster, in connection with a matter involving driving, amounted to singling out the wider Punjabi and Sikh community and reflected what he described as racial and community bias.
The SGPC chief said targeting any community on the basis of its religious identity, name or appearance was contrary to the values of a civilised society. He added that language that could intimidate or demean immigrant communities was inconsistent with America’s multicultural identity.
Dhami said the Sikh community is recognised globally for its hard work and commitment to humanitarian service. Linking an issue involving an individual’s driving with the entire Punjabi or Sikh community, he said, was unjust and unfair and could harm social harmony and relations among different communities.
He urged Jaishankar to raise what he termed a concerning instance of hateful conduct towards the Sikh community with the US government.
