Apple has entered the foldable smartphone market in India with the launch of the iPhone Duo, priced at Rs 2,99,900, as the technology giant seeks to offer a larger display experience while strengthening its premium iPhone ecosystem.
The device will be available from October 23, with pre-orders beginning October 16. It features a 7.6-inch inner display and a 5.4-inch outer display, with both screens sharing the same aspect ratio to allow content to scale proportionally between them.
Apple said the inner display features a nano-texture finish designed to reduce glare and minimise the visibility of the foldable crease.
The iPhone Duo is powered by Apple’s A20 Pro chip and comes with an advanced thermal management system, dual-battery architecture and a new camera system. Apple claims up to 31 hours of video playback on the inner display and up to 44 hours on the outer display.
The foldable also introduces camera and communication features tailored to its form factor, including Smart Take, Duo Preview and Duo FaceTime. iOS 27 adds multitasking capabilities such as Split View and the option to save pairs of apps.
“iPhone Duo is the most transformational change to iPhone since the original. With an entirely new design and intuitive experiences, it shows what’s possible when hardware and software are engineered together and redefines what it means to use a foldable phone,” John Ternus said.
Prabhu Ram, Head of the Industry Intelligence Group at CyberMedia Research (CMR), said the device is likely to establish an ultra-premium segment above the Pro series rather than generate large volumes in the near term.
According to Ram, the price premium over US pricing reflects factors including memory-cost inflation, rupee depreciation, customs duties, local tax structures and channel margins. He said structured retail financing could help attract affluent buyers, estimating an additional monthly outlay of around Rs 20,000 over an iPhone 18 Pro Max baseline of about Rs 28,817.
“While near-term shipments will remain modest and supply-constrained, the Duo is well-positioned to convert core Pro Max users,” Ram said.
The iPhone Duo will be offered in Star White and Night Sky, with storage capacities ranging from 256GB to 2TB.
Ram said foldable smartphones currently account for less than 1 per cent of total smartphone shipments. However, he added that Apple’s entry could attract existing iPhone users and early technology adopters while encouraging greater innovation across the foldable smartphone segment.
