Prices of 19-kg commercial LPG cylinders have increased by Rs 9.50, while aviation turbine fuel (ATF) prices for domestic airlines have risen by 5.46 per cent, or Rs 6.28 per litre, with the new rates coming into effect from Tuesday.
State-owned oil marketing companies (OMCs) raised ATF prices from Rs 115 to Rs 121.28 per litre, marking the second consecutive monthly increase.
ATF prices had gone up by Rs 5 per litre in August after being reduced by the same amount in July. Jet fuel is a major operating expense for Indian airlines, accounting for around 35-40 per cent of their overall costs.
The latest increase is expected to raise fuel expenses for domestic carriers and could add pressure on airfares. However, ticket prices are also influenced by factors including passenger demand, competition and available network capacity.
Separately, Mahanagar Gas Ltd (MGL) has raised the prices of compressed natural gas (CNG) and domestic piped natural gas (PNG) in Mumbai from September 1.
CNG has become costlier by Rs 2 per kg, taking its price in Mumbai to Rs 88 per kg. Domestic PNG prices have increased by Rs 1 per standard cubic metre (SCM).
MGL attributed the increase to higher input gas costs linked to international indices amid the ongoing crisis in the Middle East.
“In view of the ongoing crisis in the Middle East, which has resulted in a significant increase in input gas prices linked to international indices, MGL has announced a revision in the prices of CNG,” the company said in a statement.
The commercial LPG price increase comes after the government last week fixed maximum cooking gas production targets for individual public- and private-sector refineries and upstream companies.
In an order issued in August, the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas specified maximum LPG production levels for 21 refineries and upstream companies, with their combined production potential fixed at 63,810 tonnes per day.
