A 17-year-old Indian-American teenager has been charged with murdering his mother and younger brother at their home in Acton, Massachusetts, after investigators alleged that he had searched the internet and ChatGPT for theoretical ideas or fantasies about killing his family.
Arjun Aravind faces two counts of murder in the deaths of his mother, Sudha Venkatesan, 45, and his 14-year-old brother, Siddharth Aravind, the Middlesex District Attorney’s Office said.
He also faces two counts each of assault and battery on a household or family member and assault and battery, along with charges of stealing a motor vehicle and using a vehicle without authority.
Police were called to the family’s Martha Lane residence shortly after 6:37 p.m. on Tuesday after Arjun’s father, unable to contact his family, alerted authorities. A tutor expected at the house had also been unable to reach anyone.
Officers found Siddharth on the first floor and Venkatesan in the finished basement, both with visible signs of trauma. Arjun was missing, as was his mother’s green 2014 Honda Accord.
Authorities subsequently issued an alert for the teenager and the vehicle and advised members of the public not to approach him.
Early Wednesday, police responding to an unrelated alarm in a parking lot on Andrew Avenue in nearby Wayland located the Honda with Arjun inside. He was taken into custody without incident.
“The subsequent investigation indicates that Arjun had recently been demonstrating concerning behaviour, including using the Internet and ChatGPT, to make searches for theoretical ideas or fantasies regarding killing his family,” the district attorney’s office said.
Prosecutors allege that Arjun fatally assaulted his mother and brother before leaving the residence in his mother’s vehicle. Authorities have not disclosed what weapon, if any, was used. The medical examiner will determine the precise cause and manner of the deaths.
Arjun was arraigned in Lowell Juvenile Court on Wednesday on the motor-vehicle-related charges. Prosecutors said the murder and related assault charges are expected to be brought in Concord District Court because the Juvenile Court does not have jurisdiction over murder charges.
The investigation is being conducted by the Middlesex District Attorney’s Office, Acton Police and Massachusetts State Police detectives assigned to the prosecutor’s office, with assistance from police departments in eight neighbouring communities.
Under Massachusetts law, a person aged 14 or older can be prosecuted as an adult when charged with murder.
